SINGAPORE: Opposition politician Chee Soon Juan has managed to raise the S$30,000 needed to annul his bankruptcy.
The
Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) said on its website on Monday that the
Discharge CSJ Fund raise the money in a "record 10 days".
Dr
Chee, who's Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP),
started his fund-raising drive after former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew
and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong agreed to accept the
S$30,000 he had offered to annul his bankruptcy order.
The
Discharge CSJ Fund website was set up to sell Dr Chee's latest book,
Democratically Speaking, to raise the money and to appeal for donations.
Dr Chee said he'll make the necessary arrangements to remit the money to the Official Assignee this week.
He has signalled his intention to lead the SDP in the next general election, due in 2016.
Dr
Chee was declared a bankrupt in 2006 for failing to pay S$500,000 in
damages to Mr Lee and Mr Goh for defaming them during the 2001 General
Election campaign.
