2006 Election aftermath
What do you think was on voters minds when Lee Hsien Loong decided to increase the GST to 7% and increase ministers pay shortly after he was given a strong mandate the 2006? When he campaigned for a strong mandate in 2006, his message was he will take care of the poor, look after Sngaporeans and address the widening income gap. But the moment he got into office his priority was to increase GST and increase his ministers' pay.
Now that it is election time he is saying the same things again - that he will take care of Singaporeans and help those in need. These is only one intelligent line (and countless unintelligent ones) I remember from George Bush:
Seriously, dont understand why anyone would vote for PAP.
There are so many issues:
Foreigner policy, High HDB cost, CPF, National service (ICT, RT, IPPT), ERP, Squeezing on mrt, mas selamat, floods, high minister pays, MP's lack of empathy (Other mp will tell you to go see your mp and you will never see your own mp), lack of jobs, university places, housing. Even the ministers are threatening us with our votes.
Advantage of voting for opposition.
1) PAP will start fearing for votes in the future elections. PAP will start to introduce better policy for us unlike in the 2006 election where they promise this promise that but turned out increase GST, increase ERP and increase their own paycheck.
2) PAP will at least slow down the huge influx of foreigners who are taking away our jobs, housing and university places. Right now, foreigners already account for 40% of our population. Anything more, we should call this place 'foreignapore'.
3) Oppositions this time round are good and credible. Most of them understand our predicament and needs. They will provide much needed fresh voice into the parliament.
4) More gst offset packages on the way if we vote for opposition. When pap is afraid, they will dish out more goodies, tax rebates and it can only be good for us.
5) Show that we have integrity and will power. We will/must not be intimidated by threats.
He already said sorry......twice. Alright, so sorry no cure.
i was having lunch with a PRC colleague. shes a 24yr old gal who just graduated from NTU and now working in a MNC while waiting for PR approval.
just started a casual topic like, wad do u like about this country and how are u coping
so we get the standard reply. wad stuns me, was the answer to my next question.
me: " so wad makes u decide to come here"
PRC: " i didnt"
me: " wa, ur parents force u here or ur bf is here"
PRC: "neither, ur SG gahment invited us here"
me: " huh, wad do u mean"
PRC: " ur MOE went to our school in our village and told us they URGENTLY need students here, infact they were hardselling the whole scheme and many of us signed up"
me: " huh, wad did they offer"
PRC: " they offer us, ALL Expenses paid for our fees in NTU, including lodging and we even get pocket money"
me: *mouth open
PRC: "on top of that, they have send me the INVITATION letter to apply for PR after we grad"
i seriously begin to wonder the magitude of the FT problem has many more sides that many of us do not know,
i lose my pride as a sgporean after hearing this and i really wonder do they really care ?

My personal experience in my previous coy.
Knew this PRC guy who studied in NUS on FULLY PAID scholarship. FREE lodging, FREE allowance, FREE tuition fees.
Only 'bond' he had to serve was to work in SG for 3 yrs. No need to be any specific coy. Just need to work in SG for 3 yrs.
After just 1+ yrs, he packed his bags and went back to China to work for an international bank.
I can't even afford to stay in the uni's hostel and experience uni hostel life. Yet this guy gets to come here FREE EVERYTHING and then pat his backside and went off to China just like that.
I'm a 2nd class citizen in my own country!!!! I feel betrayed, forsakened and used... best of all... I feel a stinging pain in my backside...
Edit : Just to add, he was AUTOMATICALLY GIVEN a PR when he grad

PRIME Minister Lee Hsien Loong's apology to Singaporeans for mistakes made in the past five years is refreshing and reassuring ('PM says sorry'; yesterday).
He also emphasised that the People's Action Party (PAP) adopts a different style in working with a new generation of Singaporeans compared with Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.
This is good to know.
However, I have noticed that in the current hustings, it is the PAP which is consistently hitting below the belt and not campaigning the way a new generation of Singaporeans will appreciate.
It started with Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, who is contesting Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, questioning if his rival Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) candidate had a gay agenda.
Subsequent instances followed: Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong's personal and unwarranted remarks about his former principal private secretary and now SDP candidate Tan Jee Say (Holland-Bukit Timah GRC); and Minister Lim Hwee Hua's (Aljunied GRC) salvo against rival Workers' Party secretary-general Low Thia Khiang, questioning the accounts of Hougang Town Council without showing proof.
Foreign Minister George Yeo (Aljunied GRC) also claimed that Mr Low has abandoned the residents of Hougang who voted for him.
The simple retort would be that several PAP MPs have also shifted ground for the current General Election, including Mr Baey Yam Keng, who moved from Tanjong Pagar GRC to Tampines GRC.
Trust Singaporeans to make the right choice. We hope we do not see the PAP resorting to desperate measures when the party gets rattled, when the opposition has by and large campaigned with restraint.

Buying votes overseas with our money, while our poor and elderly suffers, truly a disgusting PAP party.
I agreed on the disgusting portion of sponsoring the growth of foreigners instead of locals for the university education.
He should resign immediately for selling the place short.
It is time to open the account book to be audited.
They have travelled around the world on our expenses especially on various parts of china with NO results yielded.
It is time for them to explain their expenditure and stop the old man from his world tour any more.
Those stories of PRC students coming to NUS and NTU on scholarships is nothing new. Average students and this is the kind of quality that we're inviting. No need do freaking NS some more.
Wow better stop before my blood boils over lol.
We dont want them to feel sorry. We want them to regret. We want them to repent. They are not god.
You pay 2 millions plus to minister. Do you want accountability?
Even if they want to repent now, its too liitle too late. Just 3 days before polling date and they start to say sorry? Why dont you dont study for your O levels at all, then 3 days before O levels say sorry to cambridge?
When Mas Selamat escape, did wong kan seng make an official apology?
Did Prime minister ask wong kan seng to resign? Instead, pm lee ask opposition member Low TK whether wong kan seng should resign. If low TK can decide for pm lee, then Low TK can be prime minister already.
And lots more. You go watch and judge yourself.

"Don't expect others to vote in the Opposition for you. Only the citizens can decide...Every vote counts.
Refer to topic...
SGreans are too intimidated by the ruling ELITE to vote for the opposition based on what some senior ruling party members are "warning SGreans"
Add on: the SORRY SAGA is to tug at SGreans hearts, they noe SGreans are always easy to forget and are very forgiving what the RULING ELITE has done for the past 5 years with a simple apology...
Bring in the opposition to check the RULING ELITE...
Just a simple point to note: AMK flood yest... y?~
coz the drains are filled with dried leaves, just walk around still rd, mountbatten rd and anywhere you should see most drains filled with dried leaves, so is NEA or the Minister in charge doing his job?!

Flooding is not really a big issue for me. It happens to many country. And even when they said the wrong things like "this is a flood that only comes in once every 10 years". Okay i can forgive that since once in a while, you say something wrong, make mistake.
What i cannot forgive is:
1) Mas selamat escape and no official apology was given.
2) Liars.

2) Easy PR policy for foreigner.

Being treated like second-class citizen at my own country.
3) Crocodile tears and saying sorry 3 days before election.
me: " so wad makes u decide to come here"

- PRC on PAP MOE.
If opposition lose this time round, they may lose it forever.
Because foreigner will be converted to PR.
And some PR will be converted to Singaporeans. (Criteria: Only needs to be PR for 2 years).
And these PR amounts to a few million voters who may continue to vote for PAP for bringing them in as they are taught to be grateful. Most PR are anti-oppositions when it come to the real voting.
Last night, I was chatting with a group of parents in the tuition enter....and as usual, the hot topics, GE.....one parent brought up this question:
"Can the opposition deliver and keep the promise? Right now, we only listen to their talks, very encouraging and very determine to help the pple. But will they titled (their promise) when they are mps? Supposing they tilted, what will happen to the people?"
Hmmm...that make me think seriously for this question.
Anyway, it is better than 1 or 2 grc belongs to opposition so that they can act as a check on whatever pap implement without gathering any feedback from the people.
Why are you so worry?
Your current MP can clean your town, the opposition can also do the same.
The important point is not whether the opposition can deliver or not at this moment. PAP has more than 2/3 of the seats are still calling the shots.
Right now, the most important thing is to have enough opposition to block unreasonable new policy from implementing. This will increase their playing field and let them prepare to take over as a ruling party in future.
Agreed with you.
Have 1 grc taken over by the opp to go in parliament and voice out spore woes....hopefully, they can voice out and not being drown by 2/3 of the mps again and again and again.

Opposition can indeed do a good job in their town council, Hougang is one of them i can say that pride is taken to clean the town and maintain it unlike some GRCs like Marine Parade...
Now the worry is SGreans fall prey to PAP's i am sorry tactic and vote for ruling elite as there will use cooling day to scare SGreans again that SG will fall into disrepair if PAP is not in power
Yes, many believe a tsunami will selectively hit the wards that do not vote PAP

You tell those parents that before the opposition could deliver and keep their promises, they first have to be voted in.If their talks sound encouraging and they are believed to be determined individuals then was is stopping there people from voting them in? I thing George Yeo mentioned something about a more caring PAP,what the people need is a more caring Government and because PAP is the Government it must be be forced into coalition. for a good change
Well, if anything, you can always vote back the pap in 5 yrs time if opposition do badly.
And you can continue to vote for more opposition if pap continue to do horribly.
Been following this erection thing lately until my typing also become haywire>LOL
I want to urge PAP supporters, please vote correctly. If you vote wrongly, PAP might lose many seats. Just like you, I want PAP to win. REMEMBER THAT EVERY VOTE COUNTS.
Some elderly Singaporeans and first time voters, maybe due to their inexperience in the voting proccess, think that to vote for PAP, they simply have to put a mark against the lighting bolt logo. THIS IS INCORRECT.
THE CORRECT WAY OF VOTING FOR THE PAP IS TO PLACE A CROSS NEXT TO THE OPPOSITION LOGO, TO SHOW YOUR DISSATISFACTION FOR THE OPPOSITION.
This is an established voting procedure in every democratic country. The logic behind it is simple. If a teacher marks an exam paper, she will place a cross next to the answer that is wrong. In the same way, if you feel that the policies proposed by the opposition party is wrong, you need to place a cross next to the opposition logo. So vote PAP. For another 5 more good and prosperous years!
