GE: WP's housing proposals amount to creating policies to crash sector, says Mah
SINGAPORE : National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan said the Workers' Party's housing proposals amount to creating deliberate policies to crash the sector here.
Mr Mah has rebutted the Workers' Party's proposed housing policies which are in its manifesto.
One of the Workers' Party's proposals is to peg new HDB flat prices to median incomes of households that qualify to buy them.
The other proposal is to lower land prices for HDB flats.
Mr Mah said the opposition party's proposals would devalue the assets of a million HDB home owners.
He added that those ill-conceived suggestions would distort the market.
Mr Mah said the Workers' Party avoids answering the questions directly when the very serious flaws in its proposals are exposed.
He pointed out that the government understands Singaporeans' concerns about the recent rise in prices, and is committed to ensuring that housing remains affordable for present and future generations.

devalue???
It's just only a freaking HDB flat to live. Someone everyone still believe it and it's only worth 99 yrs
affordable... $&(*#$&(#$(@$)%@)# wtf?
Affordable? Why not the govt do a very simple survey, ask all new couples who just out working and whether they can buy a new flat or not. Minus out renovation cost and furniture expenses.
I dont think it is affordable to many. But a few might have no problems.
Correct term is to use "lease"

Which is it now?
Crashing the sector or raiding the reserves?
If cannot convince voters, will he come out with another reason like making Santa Claus angry?
Take away the 99 yr lease.

A small plot of land can built 30 to 50 storey high with each level consists of at least 4 to 6 units. How much govt earn per unit? Make a lost? I dont think so.

Asset appreciation.
Really.
But I just can't find it anywhere in the HDB Mission Statement.
Can you?

A plot of small land to bid.
Then built high up.
That is profit.
HOUSING will not be a make-or-break issue in this year's general elections, National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan said on Sunday.
'There are so many other issues,' he told reporters at a press conference after a youth dialogue on the new Tampines Town Hub.
But Mr Mah again took pains to rebut the Workers' Party's latest comments on housing, calling the WP's proposals for cheaper housing 'ill-conceived and even dangerous'.
In a detailed four-page statement he issued on Sunday, he reiterated that the WP's suggestion to reduce new flat prices would 'distort the market and destroy the value of the million flats owned by Singaporeans today'.
'Despite WP's denial, it's proposal to lower flat prices by paying less for land will constitute a draw on reserves,' he added.
Mr Mah also described Workers' Party leader Low Thia Khiang as 'mischievous' for alleging that the Government has been guilty of taking from Singapore's reserves for years.
'This is highly misleading,' Mr Mah said. 'The Government is fiscally prudent.'

to me either way dun sound right
Fact is we dun have land, so high rise is bo pian
But e prices they're selling is macham possible making a surplus for land reserves
I wonder whether its up to Mah to say the housing break-or-make issue in this election
the votes will tell not u, Mah

In this instance he needs to throw voter attention away from his terrible housing policies.
If it was to his advantage he will be asking voters to look at them instead.
There you go, i knew the PAP would come out with threats like this. And people actually believe their home values will crash if they vote WP. New homes pegged to median incomes won't affect the resale market. They affect a different market altogether.
I dunno how come ppl care so much abt property price when it's only a place to live..
Next thing they tell you is voting the opposition into parliament will destabilise the economy and the S$ will drop, resulting in more inflation.
Watch our for more threats.

you'll be surrprised how split the ground is on this matter
bully or threaten us n WE u show u the door, mah
I have got friends telling me their property price is rising and they're so happy about it. Yeh your asset value goes up, that's cause for celebration right? But your asset goes up, everywhere else is the same too. How to profit? And making 100k of profit is no big deal these days, with the high costs of living.
Alternatively, many young sgporeans have thought of liquidating their HDBs when they reach retirement. No way the govt will allow that, when those young sgporeans reach retirement age, their HDBs are probably in the region of $2m each? How is the govt going to allow billions of $$ to deplete from their coffers just like that?
