GE: Study opposition's proposals carefully

SINGAPORE: Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng said Singaporeans should study the details and ask for more explanations on the policies which the opposition has proposed.
Mr Wong, who's also the People's Action Party's first Assistant Secretary-General, was responding to media questions on the Workers' Party's manifesto and campaign slogan unveiled on Saturday.
He said this on the sidelines of the PAP Community Foundation's 25th Anniversary celebrations.
The Workers' Party also made several proposals, such as pegging the prices of new HDB flats to the median incomes of qualifying households and assessing citizenship applicants based on a points system.
Mr Wong said such ideas may look attractive, but it's important to scrutinise the plans.
"Like in all brochures the companies put out, it is beyond just what's being written there," Mr Wong said.
"You've got to drill down to the details as to what exactly... they mean by their specific recommendations.
"When people look at all these items, they should perhaps, look into the details or perhaps ask for better explanation as to how these policies can be implemented."
When asked about 43-year-old Benjamin Pwee, a former chairman of a PAP youth wing, who has now joined the Singapore People's Party (SPP), Mr Wong said it would be up to voters to decide.
"He's one of the many young people who is now coming forward to contest in elections. Well, we'll see what the voters will decide," he said.
Mr Pwee was one of the two opposition candidates named on Sunday by SPP, who would be joining veteran opposition MP Chiam See Tong in the Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC contest.
On more Singaporeans and former PAP supporters joining the opposition, Mr Wong said individuals have the right to make their own decision.
But he said that is nothing new because opposition candidates come forward at every election.
The key, Mr Wong said, is that Singaporeans should not just choose the party alone. More importantly, he said citizens should decide on who can continue to help grow the country and improve the lives of Singaporeans.

SPP's new face: I was inspired by Chiam
By Jeremy Au Yong & Tessa Wong
MR JIMMY Lee sees himself representing a generation which appreciates what the People's Action Party (PAP) has done - but believes there is value in having alternative voices when decisions are made.
Now a new recruit to the Singapore People's Party (SPP) of veteran politician Chiam See Tong, he said his generation also thinks that what worked well in the past 'will not work best in the future'.
Said the 35-year-old graduate of Cornell University in the United States, where he studied computer science on a Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) scholarship: 'In the past, we believed in finding that great leader, and we followed that great leader. Or we invested all our resources in a very small team, and followed that team.
