SINGAPORE: The
People's Action Party's candidate for the Joo Chiat single member seat
will be veteran MP Charles Chong, who is currently an MP in the Pasir
Ris-Punggol GRC.
This was announced by Joo Chiat's incumbent MP
Chan Soo Sen, who also announced to his activists that he would be
retiring from politics.
Mr Chan said with this introduction, Mr
Charles Chong will join the Joo Chiat team to take part in its walkabout
and cycle-about, various grassroots events, as well as General Election
Committee meetings.
The incumbent MP also paid accolade to his
residents, grassroots leaders, activists, and comrades for the
opportunity to work together for the past 15 years.
He said it has been both fruitful and unforgettable.
Mr
Chan said: "We witnessed the many changes in Joo Chiat during this
period. Many new businesses and new residents have moved in. We
participated in the development of Joo Chiat community together,
anticipating and solving problems. These were challenging at times.
"However,
we developed strong bonds in the process. We have evolved a unique Joo
Chiat community spirit that genuinely emphasises neighborliness and
participation. This may mean taking a little more time to achieve
results. However, with participation, there is commitment and ownership
to what we do."

What's that F-A-C-E? Charles Chong.. i saw his face front page STs today.. truly not a face I feel is trustworthy.. Will we ever see an opposition candidate on front page?... Is STs fair in its election coverage? Or are they only reporting what PAP wants us to hear...I think so?

“Maybe it made lesser mortals envious and they thought maybe he was a bit boastful. Would people have taken offence if his wife (a senior investment counsellor at a bank) had paid for everything ?”
VETERAN MP Charles Chong will represent the People's Action Party in Joo Chiat during the next general election - a sign that the PAP is taking no chances in the largely upper-middle-class ward.
The incumbent, Mr Chan Soo Sen, 54, confirmed what party sources had indicated last week: that he will be retiring.
Mr Chong, 57, a five-term MP, was introduced at the Joo Chiat PAP branch on Sunday by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, who described him as a candidate of 'considerable ability' with a 'proven track record'.
'I'm confident that with Charles here, residents will continue to be well looked-after,' said Mr Teo, who was Joo Chiat's MP from 1992 to 1997, before Mr Chan took over.
On Sunday, Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said Mr Chong was 'the best man for Joo Chiat'.
'He's very amiable. He can get to know people very quickly. Within a week or so, I think he will be able to establish rapport,' he said, after a walkabout in an area of Joo Chiat that has been merged with Marine Parade GRC.
