Will PAP last?
MM Lee says ruling party will be voted out if it declines in quality and opposition fields a strong alternative
THE founding leader of the People's Action Party (PAP) who led it for 38 years as secretary-general has predicted its loss of power in government.Mr Lee Kuan Yew said in a new book to be launched today that the day would come when voters 'get tired of a stable government and say let's try the opposition'.
'There will come a time when eventually the public will say, look, let's try the other side, either because the PAP has declined in quality or the opposition has put up a team which is equal to the PAP and they say, let's try the other side. That day will come.'
He referred to the Japanese Liberal Democratic Party, which held power from 1955 to 2009, with an 11-month interruption from 1993 to 1994, and said its downfall was partly because it 'carried on with old ideas'.
He added: 'No system lasts forever, that's for sure. In the next 10 years to 20 years, I don't think it'll happen. Beyond that, I cannot tell. Will we always be able to get the most dedicated and the most capable, with integrity to devote their lives to this? I hope so, but forever, I don't know.'
Mr Lee, who was party leader until 1992 and now remains on its central executive committee, made these candid comments in a series of interviews with a team of Straits Times journalists. The interviews are published in a new book, Lee Kuan Yew: Hard Truths To Keep Singapore Going, to be launched today at St Regis Singapore.

No party stays in power forever.
And history teaches us rise and fall of empire. Even the Roman empire also gt rise n fall.
PAP will be voted out if our country goes through tough times ( Not as prosperous as now) and many problems in society begin to surface.

the opposition party will also be created by PAP...............
PAP will fall when majority of S'poreans finally awaken and find their balls to vote them out !

Human evolves and so do any political party as a whole for the well beings of the society at large. My thinking is that Singapore would evolve into a most humane political and society in 30 years times. Let keep the finger crossed, and with all your invaluable input of loving kindness and support of a harmonious coexistence in the near future for the love towards your future sons and daughters

in less then 20 years

actually having a PAP runnin the show is as good as no PAP runnin the show.my life with PAP hasnt improved in 20 years!in fac t made worse......no di9fference with a pap or no pap!

in fact no government is probably same as having pap.see!!im here in oz withput a pap and yet life continues as normal.so in conclusion........pap is not exactly useful.if pap leaves tomorrow....the MOM building will still be there...the high courts will still function.....the stiock exchange will still work......people will still drive their buses n taxis....life still continues.
only thing we wont see would be pm or pap minsters on tv only.other than that...........all is as normal....everything continues daily.

I think now is a question of whether citizens here will outlast PAP or not, PAP will be finished but maybe the shape of the party remains but all over run by foreigners as well and will behave openly mediocratic, even with the help of Shxt Times and will openly discriminate locals citizens with even more fervour than before.
