The Prime Minister of Singapore has revealed his intentions to declare The Online Citizen as a political association.
According to an email sent to TOC at 5pm yesterday evening by the Prime Minister’s office, the Prime Minister ”intends to declare the owners, editorial team, and administrators of The Online Citizen, by order in the Gazette, to be a political association for the purposes of the Political Donations Act. The owners, editorial team, and administrators of The Online Citizen have been determined to be an organization whose objects or activities relate wholly or mainly to politics in Singapore.”
This means that TOC is barred from receiving funds from foreign donors, letting foreigners take part in its events, operating as a political party and being affiliated to any local or foreign political party.
It is also not allowed to use its funds, premises and new media platforms in any election here, including the sponsoring of any candidate or member.
TOC has 14 days to reveal the identities of its owners, editorial team and administrators. TOC is also required to designate a President, Treasurer and Secretary of the association, and they will be responsible for the preparation and accuracy of the donations reports for The Online Citizen.
The last group to be gazetted is human rights advocacy NGO Maruah in November last year. Maruah is the fourth group -after the Open Singapore Centre, the Think Centre and Singaporeans For Democracy – to be gazetted as a political association.
If TOC complies, it will be the fifth. It will also be the first time bloggers are considered a political association.
you should start keeping minutes for that 10:30pm club in case they decide to gazette 10.30pm club too

there is a thread in SG:10.30pm club in a dot, each of you can just use that.
Hundreds of thousands of foreigners are in Sinkapore, sucking us dry, the dumb guy can close down as many things as he wants, thousands of locals are jobless, sick, homeless and poor. Nothing can hide all that.
It is very obvious that the dumb guy is trying only to stop people like Mr Leong Sze Hian from whacking the government with his truthful analysis of government statistics that often misled people.

Ur PM is trying wadever It can to remain on power/ reduces losses in next GE.
PM should just ban all parties except PAP. Best solution.
guess the F2F meeting was a triggering point. Such unison is what the ruling part can't handle.

The government most probably has lots of other options as well, just wait til after election, if some oppositions are elected, just watch how government will fix them.
This is a terrible country.

The dumb guy PM probably also can't take Gerald's statement of "Policy makers are not out of touch, they know but they don’t care."
Sinkapore is another Balhae tragedy in the making.

The rulers spare no effort to keep in power by curtailing all factors that might affect them.
Now, a political association that cannot be affiliated to any political party, that's pretty stupid isn't it?
The Online Citizen portal to be gazetted as political association

SINGAPORE : The
Registry of Political Donations under the Prime Minister's Office has
confirmed it sent a letter to The Online Citizen portal of its intention
to gazette it as a political association.
On Tuesday morning,
The Online Citizen had posted on its website that it received an email
from the Prime Minister's Office on this.
Responding to media
queries, the Registry said the Political Donations Act (PDA) prohibits
political parties, political associations and candidates in
parliamentary or presidential elections from accepting donations from
impermissible or foreign sources. In addition, it requires these
entities to report large donations received.
The Registry added
that as a website that provides coverage and analysis of political
issues, The Online Citizen has the potential to influence opinions and
shape political outcomes in Singapore. As such, it has to be gazetted to
ensure it is not funded by foreign elements or sources.
Apart
from this, the Registry said that The Online Citizen is entirely free to
continue with its normal, lawful operations and to receive financial
support from Singaporeans and Singapore-controlled companies.
The
Media Development Authority has also written to The Online Citizen that
it has 14 days to register.

Ban the website lor. I think same situation as TR.
Govt cant do much to it (since its registered with a US domain), except banning us from surfing the website.

sheltered democracy.
just a very wild hunch.....TOC may just organise a petition, get the signatures in a last ditch appeal.
If TOC is really made a political association, it will only create more backlash. The inevitable cannot suddenly be diminished if it's inevitable.
