Looks like our 1st national hero was conveniently remembered when the coin purse was distributed.
I wonder if Singapore had not gotten that silver medal, would he have been given that cash reward or even mentioned in the media at all?
"Since the women's table tennis team took the silver in Beijing and with it, a S$750,000 cash reward, there have been calls for Mr Tan to be rewarded as well for his trail-blazing feat 48 years ago."
This is a disgrace,we must make noise than the council will actually award him his due? Quick to react when people make comments about the table tennis teams origins but so slow when it comes to recognising a champion that has earned his place long ago?
In the mean time,I would like to congratulate Mr Tan on a reward well deserved and like in the words of my grandfather,"Huh,you mean they actually remembered?I thought the new generation all nearly forgotten who he is and only know those ping pong things!"
they no plus SGD strengthen and inflation... $10k is a big in 60s.. but not now...
I hope that his share is just as big as those that the table tennis team will be taking home individually.
All silver wa,should his share be any less?
Imagine if Feng or LJW take home $50K each, what would this say about Mr Tan?
"You old man already lah,no need so much money. We still young and not married. We need the money to finance our essential needs like future Peking University education, branded bags from Paragon,Ngee Ann City,etc..."
But since I do not know the size of other people's shares,I shall trust that they did distribute it equally even to him.

Let's hope they actually put it to good use in developing their youth programmes instead of using it to upgrade to a golden carrot to dangle on a stick.

Well... why Tan Howe Liang did not get money last time because he is a Singaporean.

Indeed!
Similarly, should all those that served extra half year in army (2.5 yrs) be compensated by serving half year less in reservist?
There's a cut-off (or on) date for many things... Cannot stretch like that one lah...

I do agree with you that it is hard to reward retrospectively.
Still, I am glad that some form of cash award is given to Mr Tan Howe Liang. He belongs to a generation of athletes who has little recources but who has much passion, will-power and discipline. My dad, who knows Howe Liang, said that Howe Liang said its so hard to train younger athletes now because if they get a bit of hard training one day, they cry and don't come back the next.
I just feel that eventhough there was no such thing as big cash awards in the past, Singapore should have taken care of its award winning athletes better. Afterall, gah-men give second careers to MPs, ministers and all the senior army officers as they do not want to have them "begging in the streets" after their appointments as it is embarrassing. That's why you see some many retired MPs at NTUC/PA and so many retired colonels and BGs (Baby Generals) at Singapore Technologies, haha!

Nice of you to liken his national achievement to having babies.....I have deep respect for you.
So I guess there are plenty of olympic medal winning Singaporeans like Mr Tan Howe Liang about in Singapore, almost as many as the birth rate.Yup,too many already.
True then,it does not make economic sense to award them all.

We can be frequently reminded of his achievement as commonly quoted in anything that says something about Singapore's medal draught but yet we have a cut off date to recognize that achievement?
Wow,just wow!Maybe the sports council should have a printed set of rules which goes something like this "Singaporean Athletes who achieve a medal at any international event will have a cut off date for recognition of 10 years from the date of achievement. After the stipulated date,it's up to the council's discretion as to whether to award the athlete or publicize him/her."
Aiya, the award is to distract you people from the table tennis controversy lah.
