It is 2008 and the Olympics
is just around the corner. This year it is being hosted in China and so
much controversies have since occurred and I just hope that it will not
be affected by boycotts. Reason?
I am actually
hoping that the world record of 7 gold medals achieved by the one time
great USA swimmer Mark Spitz in the uneventful '72 Munich Olympics, be
broken. It has already been 36 years and as the records for
the events are ever improving with each meet - it is this record which
has stood till today. Will we be looking at another heroic achievement
for this Games in Beijing, this year? What do you think? Who do you
think
will have the potential to break this record? Michael Phelps?
Mark Spitz, the greatest swimmer in history and holder of the
most extraordinary
achievement of the modern
Olympic Games
For the record:
His remarkable
seven gold medals at the 1972 Games.
That summer in Munich, Spitz set four
individual World records:
100-Meter
(51.22),
200-Meter Freestyle (1:52.78),
100-Meter (54.27),
and
200-Meter Butterfly
(2:00.70).
He also participated in
three relay event World records:
4 x 100
Freestyle (3:26.42),
4 x 200 Freestyle
(7:35.78), and
4 x 100 Medley (3:48.16).
He swam the third leg of the 200
Freestyle and 100 Medley, and the last
leg of the 100 Freestyle.
