is that a drill or something?Originally posted by redstone:I'm now having problems doing my sea exit.
The part where you push down the stern and 'jump' in the water to mount the stern: I can't jump in water
Finally I managed to complete the above with help from others. Then comes the "turning yourself around and grabbing the deckline" procedure. I found that I have difficulty balancing myself. That day the currents came, and any wave that came will destabalise the kayak and dump me back into the water.
Any good advice for this?
not sure if i read ur description correctly.. but the maneuver u described sounds like the recovery section of the 1 star.Originally posted by redstone:I'm now having problems doing my sea exit.

not to mention the painful ropeburn on the inner thighs as u pull urself up the stern.Originally posted by alfagal:hee i jus recover from e combing (middles) of e kayak...though recovering from e stern takes lesser strength.
it takes quite awhile to reach e seat from the stern, and lots of balancing is involved. more challenging when one is wet from e capsize..makes things more slippery. usually i just bend forward, to keep CG low..
Oh, I'm doing single person sea entry / exit. Capsize recovery I havent learn cos I'm the only one who has difficulty doing the sea exit.Originally posted by Spear:if that's the one, here's a simple maneuver i learnt useful for those with lesser upper arm strength:
1. push the stern (obviously)
2. launch ur upper body onto the stern and use ur abs to pivot urself on
3. maintain ur breath; stimultanously grabbing hold of the deckline to pull urself up.
4. legs spread apart and manuevering urself upwards low in a "butt-crawl".
5. dun get excited when u near the seat; maintain low "butt-crawl"
one useful tip is to watch the waves as u begin the above maneuver.
if u attempt the above when u hv a wave coming at u from ur back, the stern will simply bob upwards.
u'll of cos fail in ur attempt and gotta to la di da and wait till it passes.
try it. see if it works for u.
haha.. yeah.. i can imagine.Originally posted by alfagal:haha yeah..
but i usually go in shorts..and it works fine for me...or maybe its cos i always just climb from e middle haha..
e first few times when i had to e capsize drill, got me so exhausted, e guys just pulled my floating device to get me out of e water into the kayak..
Oh what's the name of the rescue when you pull the capsized kayak over the safe kayak and drag it over, like see-saw. Then you hug the kayak and pull down one side so water will drain out?Originally posted by Spear:haha.. yeah.. i can imagine.
basic rescue is already kinda tough. i cant imagine ppl doing the x-rescue technique thats to be performed when there's only 2 ppl out on a rough sea.
haha i like e x rescue better..more room for e 'victim' n e rescuers dun have to maintain e 'H'...Originally posted by Spear:haha.. yeah.. i can imagine.

1 Push stern (and jump in water).
This one slight problem cos I long time never swim liao. They say jump in water. I kick, jump, still no difference from vert. floating.
3. maintain ur breath; stimultanously grabbing hold of the deckline to pull urself up.
Got breathing technique? How do I go about doing the breathing? Finally managed to do 1 and 2 with assistance.

I always kena dumped into the water by the waves.Any advice on balancing? Thanks
The pulling part cos I tired liao, then deckline very slippery, I pull very hard to move. Maybe my pants got snagged in the front know of deckline
You can say I'm thin on my upper body, my fats are in my lower body. Sadly since poly no more PE my stamina been dropping. Before the kayaking we need to do PT, average alternating 30 push ups, sit ups, jumping jacks. The record done is 120 jumps. By then sometimes I already feel very drained. Yup poor stamina. I must train more.Originally posted by alfagal:guess u jus need more water time redstone.
i dont press hard on e stern, just use it as a support, then use my legs to kick myself out of e water..just like how i swim 'frog stlye'. i aim to get half e body out of the water...then e rest wld be upper body strength to pull oneself in..
i bend forward, in a position where my head is close to the deck..then slowly pull oneself in..try not to move too much only use ur arms..
btw, are u quite a big guy or something? cos size does matters...
oh... I'm doing sea entry / exit training only, not rescue or recovery. Just jump into the sea and climb back.Originally posted by Spear:hmm.. okie.. then i'm lost. not sure which drill u're refering to liao.
anyway, there's really no special breathing technique. juz that it's impt to hold the breath when u harden ur abs to balance on the stern. but of cos u need to breath. juz do that slowly in a controlled manner.
as for balance, well.. alfagal summed it up very nicely - low CG. as low as possible.
anyway, alot depends on the weather condition of the day u took ur course as well. who knows, maybe its isnt u but the rough seas that hindered some movements.
oh. that one.. know liao.Originally posted by redstone:oh... I'm doing sea entry / exit training only, not rescue or recovery. Just jump into the sea and climb back.
yeah.. that one's definitely more exciting. the rescuer has a bigger challenge of balancing his/her kayak while doing that see-saw emptying of water.Originally posted by alfagal:haha i like e x rescue better..more room for e 'victim' n e rescuers dun have to maintain e 'H'...
i took my course at changi...guess it can b quite rough...think just need more practise to get used to it...
Haha first jump in, sure kena water in face. Pui, the sea water is bitter.Originally posted by Spear:oh. that one.. know liao.
rem that one cos i asked instructors wat to do if nature calls. And they told me to do that. hee..
I'm a land person too, trekking type. Not so much of boulder climbing. Ever since I got into adventure activities that I found, adventure training not only your physical but your metal strength as well.Originally posted by alfagal:u just need more practice i guess..
it makes better!
i'm a very land sports person...so first time i got into e water it feels so stranger to me...but i got used to it soon =)
