Police reveal details of Ball's death
World Cup-winning hero Alan Ball died of a suspected heart attack after battling to put out a bonfire in his garden, Hampshire police have confirmed.
The 61-year-old, the youngest member of the team that lifted the Jules Rimet trophy, was found collapsed at his home overnight and later confirmed dead.
Ball won 72 caps for his country in a 10-year England career and is the second member of the 1966 side to pass away after captain Bobby Moore in 1993.
Firefighters and officers were called to his home in Warsash, Hampshire, at 12.15am this morning when his body was discovered outside.
A Hampshire Police spokesman said Ball had been trying to tackle a bonfire that had got out of control when he collapsed and died.
There are no suspicious circumstances to the death, he added.
Ball had spent the day working on his garden, but it appeared the fire had spread to a fence.
He died just hours after watching television coverage of Manchester United's 3-2 Champions League semi-final first leg win against AC Milan.
His son Jimmy spoke to him after the game, in which Paul Scholes set up United's equaliser with an inspirational through ball.
He said: 'I was talking to him last night just after the football and he was in great form. We were talking about Scholes' pass.'
