Michael Owen stepped up his recovery from long-term injury with a 70-minute run-out for Newcastle in a training-ground match against Gretna.
The England striker, who has been sidelined since suffering a knee ligament injury in the World Cup group game against Sweden last summer, impressed Magpies boss Glenn Roeder with his progress and scored after 10 minutes.
Fellow striker Shola Ameobi, who played for an hour as he recovers from a long-standing hip problem, was also on the scoresheet although Roeder was keen to stress both players still have a long way to go.
He said: "The two lads played in an 11-a-side game against Gretna at the training ground on Tuesday.
"Michael played for 70 minutes and Shola played for 60 minutes and we are all, including the medical staff, very happy with the way it went.
"But again I have to say that playing an 11-a-side match on the training ground is still a long way from playing Premiership football."
good to see one of the best striker Liverpool ever produced scoring on his low key return match for Newcastle, if only he can be the striker he used to be then England might have a better results in their future games... but hey, wouldn't that makes the manager stay longer as well???

dont expect owen to be as quick & fast as he used to be. look at fat ronaldo for eg. but his presence & experience will definitely help england go further.

Owen still needs time to recover his fitness. He's had a horrific injury.
I remember Shearer lost his sharpness following a career-threatening knee injury during a pre-season game with Everton in 1997. -
Not sure whether Owen will be as good as before, but if he maintains his current performance, he will be good enough for the team, even as a sub (though I hate to see him as a sub).

no they can't because almost all non english players have represented their country before they'll get work permits for their time in EPL, also don't any of the big football nations will go the way Singapore goes.. they are too proud to do that and you need to have "link" as in grandparents or parent or they are born in the home nation before they'll allow you to represent themOriginally posted by iceFatboy:can they convert EPL stars to English??

But anw, Owen back won't really solve any problems, in fact, it might make things worse. Does McClaren play a half-fit Owen or a fully-fit and more effective striker without as big a reputation as him, say Defoe or AJ? I'll give you one thing abt McClaren though, i bet he's fantastic at paper football because he noes how to put all the big names in. In real life, doesn't seem to be working is all i'll say. We'll just wait and see.
