English Premiership side Fulham sacked their manager Chris Coleman, and his assistant Steve Kean, and have replaced him with Northern Ireland's manager on an interim basis, the club said late on Tuesday.
Fulham lost 3-1 to visitors Manchester City at Craven Cottage on Monday, their fifth defeat in a winless eight-match streak that left them four points above the relegation zone with five matches left to play.
Coleman and the Cottagers were booed as the players trudged off.
"Chris Coleman has provided a fantastic service during his 10 years at the club and it is disappointing that the club has no alternative but to part company," a statement on the club's website read.
"As a team and organisation, Fulham Football Club has goals to attain and success to achieve and by no means can this be compromised."
Coleman will be replaced by Lawrie Sanchez on a caretaker basis until the end of the season.
Fulham visit Reading on Sunday, and must also face Champions League spot chasers Arsenal and Liverpool in their remaining five games.
The club is currently in 15th place in the Premiership on 35 points.
sacking him @ this time of the season won't help for sure

Northern Ireland boss Sanchez handed Fulham job tribalfooball.com - April 10, 2007
Lawrie Sanchez is new manager of Fulham after Chris Coleman was sacked last night. Coleman had come under severe pressure as his side suffered a seven-game winless streak in the Barclays Premiership to leave them hovering just four points above the relegation zone with five games left to play.
Assistant manager Steve Kean has also been sacked as part of the restructure, while Northern Ireland boss Sanchez is brought in after consultation between the Cottagers and Irish Football Association president Jim Boyce.
A statement released on the club's website: "Chris Coleman has provided a fantastic service during his 10 years at the club and it is disappointing that the club has no alternative but to part company.
"As a team and organisation, Fulham Football Club has goals to attain and success to achieve and by no means can this be compromised."
Sanchez's appointment as caretaker manager for the remainder of the season follows a successful three-year spell in charge of Northern Ireland.
During that time the province have defeated the likes of Spain, Sweden and, most famously, England at Windsor Park in September 2005.
In December that year the Irish FA gave permission for Sanchez to talk to Portsmouth following the departure of Alain Perrin, but the job eventually went to Harry Redknapp.
In 2006, the former Wycombe manager - who famously scored the winner for Wimbledon in their FA Cup final win over Liverpool in 1988 - hinted he may be willing to step down from his role as national team manager due to "the level and ferocity of the criticism from certain sections of the media" in Northern Ireland.
However, since then Sanchez has guided the traditional minnows to the top of their Euro 2008 qualifying group, ahead of Spain, Sweden and Denmark, among others.
Master -_-

Sanchez confident of success at Fulham tribalfooball.com - April 10, 2007
Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez is confident he has the ability to work in the Premiership after replacing Chris Coleman at Fulham last night.
Sanchez has led Wycombe Wanderers to an FA Cup semifinal, but his main calling card has been Northern Ireland's success during this Euro2008 qualifying campaign.
"I managed against Alan Pardew, Paul Jewell, Iain Dowie and David Moyes in the lower divisions, and they have all gone on to figure in the Premiership," Sanchez told The Times last month.
"When I think of the times I have faced some of these guys and beaten them, it reinforces my belief that I can manage at the highest level. It is just a case of being given a chance."
With Northern Ireland's qualifying campaign not due to resume until August, when they play Liechtenstein at home, Sanchez will be able to give Fulham his full attention, although problems are likely to ensue if he keeps the team in the Premiership. Given his exemplary record, few would bet against that.

fulham should go down, regardless of who manages the team. there isnt enough quality in the squad. if fulham does go down, mcbride will be the 1st to go, followed by niemi..
