It is not as if we only want the best of footballers, our local boys get their shot too, we just don't have good enough local talent on the field to form a full team.
The FTS is introduced to bring up the standards and help us. If we want to talk abt importing players, why not pay more to bring in more top tier players to help us win the world cup?
It is helping to pave the way for the future, Without this scheme, i honestly think we will take a long time, if otherwise, forever to accomplish a higher standard of football.
Look at the MVP and golden boot winner of the championship, it is none other than (if we choose to put it your way) "locally born" Nor Alam Shah.
It is obviously helping the local scene. So as singaporeans, we shld feel proud of our victory.
Everyone gets an equal shot to represent singapore. Of course, our doors are always opened to people who want to help us.
Look towards the future, we are trying to push the standards up so that we can take pride in nuturing our future generations to be better footballers.
The way u put it, makes it seems that we will continue to "buy" players to help us win competitions.
So are u not going to be proud of the local boys(born in singapore) in the future when they win further competitions? Because they are the direct product or benefit of the FTS?

Given our population size, we are never going to find enough local talents to beat our neighbours. Let's be realistic about that. So we need FTs. No two ways about it. It is how we leverage on these FTs.
One extreme is the Singapore Slingers, and one is the bowling or Sailing team.
Just for example.
Now, the FTs are incorporated into the Singapore team based on certain criteria. They must be young players, technically sound, and proven in the S-league.
I do believe there is an intention to nuture and not buy sure-win formulas like importing a ZZ or etc.
Like the previous posts, I think the focus is how we move ahead.
btw, one surprise was how well our Singapore Team sang "Majullah Singapura".. -
Its TEAM SINGAPORE even if you spell it backwards.
When Singapore played Japan at Jalan Besar a few years ago back then in Japan we were already talking about how Singapore was about to kena at least 5-0.The arrogant sportcasters here were laughing their heads in a one sided sports commentary until Singapore shockingly went one goal up.Then suddenly they too started bringing up the FT thing......sayings things like the English player is defending well or the Nigerian is fast.....In minures Japan equalised and went on to win 2-1.Nobody enjoys losing but when they do start to lose they would soon come up with the excuses to try to save some face.In that game i couldnt condemn the way Japan played but I praised SIngapore for their never say die attitude.For that same attitude the Singapore team or Team Singapore is now the undisputed Champion of ASEAN.BTW I am no longer a Singaporean but would love to see SIngapore beat Japan some day. -

i rather save the money we spend on foreign players in sports and distribute it among citizens. foreign coaches are okay, to bring in the necessary experience to pass it on to our players. we should be winning games with our own people, someone who has experience and live the good and bads of this country, like coming here at an age of 2 to 6 years, rather than any older.
i think sg got to put more effort in bringing up the standards in the sporting arena. sports have to begin at a very young age. the sports school seriously will do little help at this point of time. but then again i'm not sure about this, i think the sports school is occupied by a number of young foreign athletes. if this is true, there are so many local borned s'poreans wanting to get in the school but can't. its like the doors are wider for foreigners than local people.
in conclusion, i feel its still a team international, for now.

We are not confused abt the racial issue at all, take a look at ur neighbourhood again.
I have caucasians, chinese nationals living right in my neighbourhood.
They are not born here too. They choose to come here for work and what not.
Therefore, the team we have right now truly reflects singapore as a global city.
As i have said, the current team and the FTS will pave the way for our future.
Look at Riduan, Khairul, Alam Shah,Osman, and many more other youngsters, they are all again if u choose to put it your way, singaporean players.
And don't keep ignoring the fact that many of our forefathers were not likely born here too. We are the direct benefactors of their hard work.
Same for the future of our football. We are dead right on track. and the only way is up.

well, look at TnT, Togo and other small countries.
TnT has a popupation so much smaller than Singapore and yet they still managed a team in the world cup finals last year.
anw, my point is that FTs are not only helping to improve the local game, but also helping us to win medals, maybe move sg higher in the world rankings and letting the world know our soccer team exist..
its not as if the whole team is made out of these FTs, more than 2/3 the squad is not, the captain is a singaporean, our top scorer is a singaporean, the MVP of the last tiger cup and this years' cup are Singaporeans.
im sure if we were to lose badly like 4-0, 5-0 every game, we would not have the capacity crowd we saw at the national stadium. -

Once ronaldino, beckham, buffon, ronaldo, canavaro, fandi ahmed , rooney, henry, lampard, all come to singapore and stay here, become singaporean, then we can have a chance at world cup liao lah. -
I don't see the need to blame FTs for our so-called lack of talent.
Truth be told Singaporean soceity does not really set itself up for sporting excellence, and taking up sports as a full time calling is still not well reconized. It's like we want to medals, but yet think it's prehaps not so wise to do what it takes to get it.
Hopefully things will change in the future, as sports take a stronger foothold in Singaporean culture. Leaving the M-League was a huge leap backwards for Singaporean soccer, who knows where we would be if we didn't all degenerate into kumpung soccer all those years back. But things are once again back on track.
Personally I do not see the issue with FTs... given more or less a lot of us are decendents of FTs who came here to seek a better life. That's one part of Singapore that shouldn't change, that we offer an opportunity to other people to come here and join our unique way of life (with all it's ups and downs). I would be opposed however, to the glorification and hype of FTs, and certainly would not approve the promotion of FTs at the expense of locals (and sometimes that is an issue)... but going to the other extreme of wanting to see only true born Singaporeans dominate all fields before it's counted for Singapore is a mistake in the opposite direction, and prehaps also a slap in the face for those who have put their sweat and soul by casting their lot with us. -

I don't mind if those FTs serve NS and decide to become citizens.
What I don't like is "parachuting" foreign star players into the national team by promising them lots of $$. -
I wish the foreign talent scheme could be done much better, in terms of identifying talent. True, Shi Jiayi, Daniel Bennett and Fahrudin are good proof that we have identified good FTs, but what about the Agu Casmirs and Itimi Dicksons of the world? Itimi was awful in the final against Thailand, and had we not won, i dare say that his head will already be on the chopping block by now. And let's not even mention Agu Casmir. Shouldn''t we really look at how well the player plays with the S-League club he is in, before deciding to sign him up for citizenship? Why is it that it seems that for everyone one or two foreign talent hits, there's also 1 dud?

agree that itimi was a joke on sunday. but most of our FTs are playing rather well in the S league. also it was not too long ago when itimi made enuf contributions to help us win the last tiger cup. agu was also 1 of the top scorers of the s league some seasons ago b4 they made him citizen i believe. However, lately he has been such a disgrace to us..
players have their ups and downs. we cannot expect the players to be playing at their best form all the time.. -

I think Itimi was sent onto the pitch to form a 5-man midfield, wear down the Thais' stamina and try to win freekicks near dangerous areas. Singapore are strong at set-pieces. It's all part of Raddy's gameplan. Raddy always formulate different tactics for different matches, instead of sticking to the same players all the time.
