ya...look at holland and france...so many of their first team members are not born on local soil...even freddy adu who is playing for USA and higuan? for argentina...etc...so many cases...quite usual nowadays la...its called global talent...Originally posted by xfool:I agree, its not as if we are the only country with 'foreign' players,France anyone?
Also our country is too small to have enough good talents for football anyway.About them leaving sg for better chances I think not many of them would do that as most have families here and they prob have stayed over 5-10 years to just pack up and go so easily.
Most of singaporean think so, i guess. I'm so sad that Thailand has no money to buy and pay for such players, so we must rely on REAL Thai players only. So sad la...Originally posted by lalaTearz:doesn't really matter whether is team sg or team international..as long as they win wit a singapore name wit it....
I disagree with you. It all depends on what we want to take pride in.Originally posted by club18:hi. im new here.. anyway i really wanted to noe why singaporeans dislike the foreign athletes so much..
cos i hate it when ppl talk about our national soccer team and how it consist of so many foreigners. pls, don't call them foreigners. they are Singaporeans, just like u and me. just because they are of a different race, a different skin colour, or that their names don't consist of Tan or Mohd doesn't mean they are not Singaporean enough. Let's face it. Singapore is a cosmopolitan city. why isit that we can be happy with the foreign construction workers contributing to our economy but not foreign singaporeans increasing the standards of singapore soccer. i looked thru the papers recently and i found several comments on how we can be proud of our soccer team when it consists of so many foreigners.
1 thing i noticed, everytime our soccer team get thru to the semis or finals of some competition, these ppl will come out to criticise that our soccer team consist of so many foreigners and therefore not Singaporean enough. Whenever the team flops, these ppl will again criticise the team for having so many foreigners and yet not make the cut. What is this debate about whether we can be proud of our soccer team or not? Would u seriously be proud of a team that wins nothing? If not for these foreigners, would you see a 55,000 capacity crowd in the national stadium? Would we even be in the finals of the ASEAN cup? It can be said that some of these foreigners are lured here by the prospects of a better future and more importantly cash incentives. But we must admit that these foreigners have in a positive way contributed to the soccer standards of Singapore.. it would also benefit our "pure-bred" players to be training with these foreigners. So why not lets take it that we are buying their talents to help improve the standards of soccer in Singapore and also to help us win something.
However, Singapore really cannot rely heavily on these FTs in the long run. Who knows when they might just take our money and disappear. afterall, Singapore is not their motherland. when there are better opportunities elsewhere, they might just leave us for them. So we really have to breed our own, home-grown talents. These foreigners would help by letting young talented Singaporeans play at a higher standard. This would also help in the development of sports in Singapore. The sports school is a big step forward into creating a better enviroment for talented young Singaporeans, but dun expect the effects to be seen immediately. So till then we'll just have to wait and continue supporting team singapore and not be so myopic and complain about how some of our athletes are not born here.
Totally agree with you.Originally posted by Beyond Religion:I disagree with you. It all depends on what we want to take pride in.
If we want to take pride in nurturing , training and developing our own sports people, we have failed miserably. If we want to take pride in using money to 'import' the best sportsman and 'paying' these people to play under Singapore flag, then we have succeded.
To me, the latter is an underhand and back-door shortcut to something we will never achieve on our own. With enough money, we can 'import' the entire Italian team into Singapore (coaches, players, support staff and all), but am I going to feel proud when that team wins Singapore the 2010 worldcup? No, I will just find a hole to hide myself in.
Having said that, I approve of hiring renowned coaches to train up our people.
Having sad that, you might as well hire a local coach too.. No difference in pure local players but the coach is still FT right?Originally posted by Beyond Religion:I disagree with you. It all depends on what we want to take pride in.

Thats not the point. I have no problems with our national team being made up of players of different races... as long as these people grow up in Singapore.Originally posted by Pitot:Ask yourself this, do you see people of diff nationalities living in your neighbourhood?
Yes i do.
We are a multicultural society, we are a successful nation and we attract people here! The team that we have truly reflects us as a multicutural society.
Agree with the foreign talent scheme or not, i can tell you, we are not the only ones who think of it.
Even world cup champions also do so.![]()
I already said that even world cup champions do so, which is where our government got the ideas from.Originally posted by Beyond Religion:Thats not the point. I have no problems with our national team being made up of players of different races... as long as these people grow up in Singapore.
I have problem when we simply import the already accomplished players and buy them into our national team. Thats mercenary sportmanship.
Singaporean first. Then trained to be an accomplished player. Not the other way round.
Hiring a foreign coach is a different story. Our own players will still need to work and train hard under the couch in order to achieve their skills. That is something I can be proud of.
Call me an old dinosaur, but I believe that sports is not just about winning 'at all cost'. Its about working hard, doing your best and giving your best shot. If our own team tried their best but still lose miserably, I would still be proud of them. But if we simply import the best with money, we win where it doesn't count, but lost where it truly counts.
The fact that everybody is doing something doesn't make that something appropriate. I will continue to comment on what I think it is appropriate. It is my right to believe it wrong to 'buy' accomplished players with money, just as it is yours to think highly of our own imported national team.Originally posted by Pitot:I already said that even world cup champions do so, which is where our government got the ideas from.
Rightfully, the players are given a choice whether to settle down in singapore or not. So the players who are already here, have chosen to stay and do their part for our nation.
I have said this in numerous other threads and i will not over emphasize on it again.
Even, our forefathers are not born here.
they came and successfully build our country.
Right now, the players who are doing so much by improving the standards of our football, will be forgotten in years to come when our standards are better. They are making a sacrifice.
It is undeniable that because of the FTS, our standards have gone up.
And to those who say local football is not exciting, don't watch it.
Do you even play football urself? I am sure we know how difficult it is to compete in any sport on a professional level.
So quit ur armchair comments and watch ur EPL if u think local football is not to ur taste.![]()
I see ur point but its not as if the whole team or most of it is consists of FTs. If sg were to use this tactic then might as well get better players as they aren't really that much better than our local players.Originally posted by Beyond Religion:Thats not the point. I guess the thing now is what happens next. If the next step is to have these foreign talents to influence and teach the younger generation on how to improve and such, then yes, I can definitely accept it and would say it's a good step for now. However, if the next step is to continue to do it this way, by always taking in FTs to solve problems, then it's a big NO for me. There will come a day when eventually there will be 11 "established first, then converted Singaporean" imports starting our games. Some of you may be ok to accept this outcome, but definitely not for me.Originally posted by xfool:I see ur point but its not as if the whole team or most of it is consists of FTs.
