he's not someone i will say a good player on the field n he has absolutely no influence at all.
a better choice will be ryan giggs or schole -

he is coming of age. was too slow to react when there was a man behind him which eventually led to the first goal. even the first half incident, its was a fair penalty claim and he made little attempt for the ball.

While there's no doubt in my mind Gary Neville's the worst permanent captain in all my time of watching United (which dates back to the Robson era and has spanned 3 other captains in Bruce, Cantona and Keane), I don't see too many in the current squad with leadership qualities anyway - in fact, it's so ridiculous I wouldn't even find it absurd to consider throwing the captaincy to Rooney.
It's a far cry from the 90's when we had half a team of worthy captains playing in the same team. Case in point, at least 7-8 players in the 93/94 side(Schmeichel, Parker, Irwin, Bruce, Pallister, Keane, Ince, Giggs, Kanchelskis, Cantona, Hughes) would have made worthy captains in their own right - only pity they all had to play at the same time...

I think the problem is basically, the lot of Fergie's fledglings (the first generation) that remain all have no leadership quality - Giggs and Scholes are great footballers in their own right, but I don't think you'd say they can galvanise the team the way Robson, Bruce or Keane did (admittedly, Cantona - although deservedly regarded as one of the finest players to have ever played for United - wasn't a very good captain in my view too).Originally posted by stellazio:but giggs is still here, only that he's vice captain. will van der sar can be one, but a goalkepper as a captain isn't the best alternative either.
Hmm...interesting assessment about goalkeepers as captain - mind, Schmeichel was some captain! He certainly did alright for the bulk of 97/98 when he filled in for Keane and on the handful of occasions subsequently (it was a fitting tribute he skippered United to their finest hour in his last game

to be honest too. Currently, in man utd there's no motivated.
All dont seems to have leadership quality. Prehaps--- hargaeves will add some bite....
Giggs--- didnot inspire too. miss his hey days... now he's aging.
scholes--- too quiet
g.neville--- not inspiring.
van der sar--- not fierce enough
ferdinand--- act cool..... prone to mistake(agreeable to the dope test)
vidic--- looks not bad. but 'old bird'
Rooney--- needs time.
Ronaldo--- needs time. -

In fact, it was Ferdinand who started the mess in terms of the designated captaincy until Gary Neville was given that role.
Prior to Ferdinand missing his drug test, he was one of the frontrunners and was consistently the vice-captain to Keane - following his suspension, however, the vice-captaincy shifted from Nistelrooy(well, until he fell out with Fergie) to Scholes and Giggs on seperate occasions. Clearly, it's an indication that the current side has few who are of any serious leadership material... -

Kahn might have been the captain, but the one leading them on the pitch was Ballack was it not? Hmm in 2002, can't really remember, but anyway having a goalie as a captain is different. -
Fergie always chose captain with a fierocious attitude , players like Bryan Robson , Roy Keane , Paul Ince and Peter Schmicel all very aggressive ones .
Bryan Robson not too bad , still sometimes he argue with referees ....
Those gentle fellas just have to wait awhile for their turns .... so Wayne Rooney temperament just nice for Fergie . -
