Soccer fan Wilson was aghast when he was at the National Stadium on Wednesday 17 January to catch the Singapore Lions against the Indonesian national team fight in their bid to qualify for the semi-finals of the Asean Football Championship, and he was shocked to see masses of people smoking in the complex.
Wonders a puzzled Wilson, in his email to STOMP:
“Isn’t the National Stadium supposed to be smoke-free?”
Wilson described his smoky ordeal in the stadium:
“It was half-time during the match, and as I made my way down to the stalls I was astonished when I was greeted with clouds of smoke. It suddenly seemed as though smoking was not allowed at the stands, but is allowed at the other areas of the stadium.
What disturbed me most was I saw a mother and child trying to get out of the area by covering their noses.
I think it is necessary for the NEA to stamp their authority on these people who canÂ’t follow the rules.
I hope action will be taken and the situation won’t be repeated when the next football match takes place next week when the Singapore team takes on Malaysia.”
STOMP has alerted the National Environment about this. Watch this space for updates when we have a response.
