Asean Football Championship 2007
Impregnable defence in the lion den
Yesterday, Singapore played host to Vietnam, in a hardly fought encounter. The game could have gone either way. Singapore defence looked superbly solid, but the midfield lacked creativity and the strikers lacked the composure, to score goals. I was one of the fortunate in the 20,000 crowd, at the National Stadium. The first half saw Singapore play a 4-4-2 formation, which resulted in one great opportunity that was abysmally wasted by Alam Shah. The head coach of Singapore, Avramovic, should be focusing on the decision making of the players, especially the forwards.
The second half saw Singapore changing their tactics to a 4-3-3 formation, which I personally felt, was the wrong move. The team did not have enough players in midfield to create goal-scoring chances. The physical condition of the players deteriorated rapidly, due to the bad condition of the pitch. Only in the last 15 minutes of the game did Indra finally made his appearance, but to no avail. From what I saw, Daniel Bennett had a very good game, as Singapore ended up with a 0-0 score line at full-time.
Although slightly disappointed at the final score, a draw was much better than a defeat. Singapore meets Laos on 15th January, a win here would be very crucial to qualifying for the semis.
(In a nutshell, the more we create, the more chances we get.)
they should have won...
