As the $1m incentive failed to yield any Olympic medals, the Gahmen is now considering imposing a fine of $1m on all athletes who do not manage to win a medal.
“We have tried the carrot,” said Singapore Sports Council spokesman Koh Soo Leow. “And that didn’t work, so we boh pian must use the stick.”
Mr. Koh was referring to SingaporeÂ’s much publicized offer of $1 million in prize money to every athlete who brought back a medal from the Athens Olympics.
However, even this failed to stimulate our athletes sufficiently.
“We thought that as many of our Olympic hopefuls were foreign talent, they would respond better to incentives,” sighed Mr. Koh. “But apparently, they have become so Singaporean, we have no choice but to use penalties.”
“We feel we must be tougher,” said Mr. Koh. “Look at the bums! Lose medal, but the only person crying is our Minister! How can like that? Must make them also feel the pain and disappointment a bit, mah!”
Accordingly, all Singaporean Olympian athletes will now be fined $1m if they fail to bring back a medal from the China Olympics in 2008.
Mr. Koh says there are already signs that this tougher approach is working. “I’m told that our runners are already running faster thanks to this change in policy.”
“Yes, is true,” confirmed Kuai Dianpao, a track hopeful who came from China two years ago. “Now we all faster run off to other countries oreddy.”
