Raymond Domenech has warned Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele he will face a two-match club ban if he fails to link up with France's squad for their upcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers.
The 33-year-old has been included in Domenech's squad for games against Georgia and Italy next month, despite announcing his retirement after the World Cup final defeat to Italy.
The France coach is determined to have Makelele available for the opening games of their Group B campaign.
Under Fifa rules, any player who refuses an international call-up can be banned for two club games and Domenech says he will have no qualms about imposing the suspension.
Domenech has spoken with both Makelele and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and believes he is right to call up the former Real Madrid midfielder into his squad.
"We had a discussion (with Makelele) but I didn't ask for his opinion," Domenech said.
"For me it would be unthinkable to see a great player playing for a great club not playing for his national team.
"A player who refuses to accept a selection is liable to a two-match suspension.
"I had a discussion with Mourinho as I often do with the coaches of our international players but it was not a matter of reaching an agreement over Makelele.
"I told him where I stood, he told me where he stood. We still have the law for us."
The France Football Federation previously asked Nicolas Anelka to be banned for two Manchester City games after he turned down a call-up from Jaques Santini.
The ban was not upheld because Anelka had not been notified of his call-up in sufficient time. -

U see, after the World Cup, the entire skeleton of France is ripped apart.
Zidane, Makelele, Thuram & Barthez all walked out of the team and all are important players(apart from clown Barthez).
Makelele will play a crucial part for France and i can see why he wants to retire cos at club level he's facing stiff competition for a starting place. Raymond wans him to play for France because there really isn't any good holding midfielder left in the French squad. Before Makelele, there was Petit. After Makelele? Dacourt? Dhorasoo?

Without Makelele, Zidane and Thuram, France are basically nothing. How many times during the qualifying stage for WC 2006 have they struggled whenever these players were not ard? Henry and Trezequet are not impressive at all for France, while Ribery has not really proved he can cut it in the international stage

Makelele is the best holding midfielder in the world.
It's no wonder that the french team are unwilling to let go of him. -
Best player? Most probably.
But if he's going to be called up against his will, he's not the right player for the team. -
Raymond Domench is still around only because he led the french team to the finals. But we all know it wasn't his talents that galvanised the team now don't we?
He is a poor motivator with an egocentric behaviour on and off the pitch. In my opinion, the FFF should really look for a decent manager to re-inject the spice into the French side.
Forcing a retiring player to play an international is one thing but asking an aging player to continue to play when he has only a slim chance of staying with the squad for Euro 2008? What does that say about the coach's sense of direction?

JOSE MOURINHO blasted France coach Raymond Domenech last night, accusing him of treating Claude Makelele like “a slave.”
Domenech has ordered Makelele to play in next weekÂ’s Euro 2008 qualifiers even though the Chelsea midfielder announced his retirement from international football after the World Cup. But Domenech told Makelele if he refused to rejoin the squad he would be banned for four club games.
Mourihno said: “The Makelele situation is unbelievable. He is not a football player, he is a slave.
“He wants to retire but if he is not playing for France he will be suspended from Chelsea. The rules are clear — if a player misses one match for his country he must miss two matches for his club.
“So he has to go. He doesn’t want to but he must. So you are a slave.
“You have no human rights. There is no democracy and no liberty.” -

i understand about the ruling from fifa about banning a player who does not heed the call up. but retired players too meh? oh well, maybe there's no such thing as international retirement to fifa.. its either retire from football completely, or still carry on playing,,

Actually Makelele himself wants to play lah... Then he said he wanted to retire just after the WC lost. Now, after considering he wants to play again but dunno how to tell Mourinho since they had an agreement after the World Cup that he would retire. So the best thing is ask the France coach to select him again lor...Mourinho no choice like this
Mourinho's 'slave' claim too strong - Makelele
Claude Makelele believes Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was 'too strong but logical' when describing him as 'a slave'.
Makelele announced his international retirement for the second time after the World Cup in Germany in July but Domenech did not accept his decision.
But Makelele told French television station TPS: 'My coach's words are a bit too strong, he's probably gone too far.
'But his disappointment is logical. There was an agreement after the World Cup that I would retire.
'But I spoke with the French team coach (Domenech) and he believes I am still able to bring something extra to the team.
'I don't blame him (Domenech) for anything and I will go back and play with France.'
Makelele, 33, admits the workload of club and country games will be taxing.
'But I am in the list and I have to go. The French team is still something important for me.
'Everyone knows me and I am a professional, I do my job and even if my club is not happy I will honour my call-ups.
'So I will go to Clairefontaine (the France training camp) and I will be there for the two matches. I consider it normal to wear the colours of my country.' -

Chelsea's midfielder is believed to have verbally agreed with Mourinho last year that he would retire from international football after this summer's World Cup.
It was assumed Makelele would concentrate on Chelsea after the World Cup, having initially stepped down from internationals in 2004. However, Makelele disputed that he was being treated like a slave by France's coach, Raymond Domenech. "My coach's [Mourinho's] words are a bit too strong, he's probably gone too far,"
Mourinho has said Makelele had to accept the call-up, claiming for every France game the midfielder refused to play in, he would be forced to miss two Chelsea matches. A similar threat was first raised by Domenech but in fact Fifa's regulations merely state that a refusenik international cannot turn out for his club during the period of the release or for five days afterwards.
"There is no Fifa rule to prevent any player stopping his international career, that's up to him," a spokesman for world football's governing body said. "The one thing that has to be considered is that the intention to leave a national team or put an end to an international career needs to be communicated prior to a specific summons."
Mourinho may want Makelele to explain to him why he has been persuaded to continue with France. "We take these players but we don't have a knife against their necks," Domenech said. -
