JAMIE CARRAGHER was last night reeling after being branded a ‘joke’ by England’s fitness coach. He has also been branded a bottler by a senior member of the England backroom staff.
The Liverpool defender missed the decisive penalty as England were dumped out of the World Cup quarter-finals by Portugal on Saturday.
Carragher was brought on a minute from the end of extra-time with the score 0-0.
His sole responsibility was to take one of EnglandÂ’s first five spot-kicks.
Sven’s assistant Tord Grip was also critical. The Swede claimed: “Jamie Carragher should have known better.”
Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard had already missed when Carragher turned and slammed his spot-kick past keeper Ricardo.
But Argentine ref Horacio Elizondo had not blown his whistle and ordered a retake.
This time Carragher changed his mind, hesitated in his run-up and fired a low shot which Ricardo turned against the crossbar.
Carminati sneered: “What a joke. Jamie Carragher is a professional football player. And as a football player you know you have to wait for the referee.
“It is the same rule in England, in Italy or anywhere else in Europe. It’s the same in America or Africa — in fact everywhere.” -

at first, I felt the same way... this dumbass just shoot without thinking is it?
then i see the whole picture, it is not easy when taking a decisive kick, in a packed stadium, a referee who was your country enemies, and knowing full well, the scapegoat is already in the dressing room... -

hand him a pair of boots and ask him to take the penalty then.
arm chair critics and mediocre footballers turn coach can talk all they want but this isn't easy for anyone. if it's that easy and everyone's professional fballers and expert, then nobody will miss penalties already. -

low balls are easier to convert then high balls, but higher chance of keeper saving it.

JAMIE CARRAGHER last night told fitness coach Ivan Carminati: Belt up.
England fitness guru Ivan Carminati had accused the Liverpool defender of buckling under pressure as England crashed out of the World Cup to Portugal in a shootout on Saturday.
Carragher had netted his first attempt but was ordered to re-take it because he had fired before the ref had blown his whistle — and missed his second try.
England No 2 Tord Grip also put the boot in on Carragher for not waiting until the official had whistled.
He showed his own lack of knowledge by claiming the Reds star should have known the rules after taking a spot kick in the Champions League final shoot-out against AC Milan last season.
But Carragher NEVER took a spot kick that glorious night in Istanbul.
Others have questioned why Carragher was thrown on to take a spot kick in the first place. -
