Japan only has 1 point currently. Even if Brazil lose, Japan at most get 4 points, no? -
Japan can't qualify barring a string of miraculous results - they'd need to hammer Brazil and hope Croatia beat Australia and that Croatia still do not have a better goal difference than them after that. All Australia need is a draw in the final match because head-to-head counts before goal difference at the WC(ie.Japan cannot be ranked higher than Australia if both finish level on points).Originally posted by Poolman:Anyway .... He took over from Frank Farina with just 4 months to the end of the Oceania qualifying matches with qualification for Germany '06 nowhere in sight(that was in those dark ages before they were even assured of the luxury of a playoff with Uruguay). And in the blink of an eye, he has stepped into an eleventh hour job and taken the Socceroos to their first World Cup finals in 32 years - this is truly "The Special One" who has an uncanny ability to make even the biggest minnows overperform. -

It doesn't change what is a fundamentally simple equation - for Japan to qualify, Croatia must beat Australia and Japan must beat Brazil by a margin with at least 1 more goal than Croatia's triumph over Australia.
Realistically, I don't see the Socceroos throwing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity(esp with Hiddink in charge) of making the knockout phase away.
