As far as Eriksson is concerned, that is a moot point. McClaren (the incoming manager) is likely to retain Beckham's captaincy as well.

In all fairness, Beckham plays his heart out for England (who remembers the final qualifying match against Greece at Old Trafford in 2002?) as well. In terms of technical abilities, both Gerrard and Beckham are very good and both players complement each other in their strengths and weaknesses. Besides free-kicks, it is well-known that Beckham has excellent crossing and passing ranges. In fact, the stats of this season La Liga reveal Beckham has the highest number of assists for shots on target. That is a compliment on his contribution to a team.
Beckham however does not have the natural aura of a leader on the pitch. He is no Bryan Robson, Roy Keane or Tony Adams for that matter. But like these three players, he plays with his heart on his sleeve. -

there are players who can play their hearts, legs and lungs out but do not really motivate a team...

I think Owen will be the next captain. Currently he is the vice captian alrdy and if going by the norm he will take over. Anyway, Beck will still be around for the next 2 yrs so no point discussing this yet.

The captain shld be Paul Robinson. That's because I said so.
Otherwise, the captain should be Frank Lampard.
His contribution in recent England games is higher than Stevie, or Becks in terms of goals. And he's more important to the English squad than John Terry if Wayne Rooney is out for a longer time.
Then again, I'm shooting myself in the head for committing to a player that was never seen as a motivator. -

just joking hmm, based on what u guys say, england has too much potential. Becks have a edge over Steve G because he is older, more experience and mature. But nevertheless, be it john terry, steve G, lampard, owen or beckham, they are inspiration to the team and lift the team on their day. If let say all were on form for WC, You will see a mad team, with assists and goals like nobody business.

To reiterate what has been said earlier, David Beckham gives his all for the England team. I know that there is alot of talk about him being way too overrated and commercialized. Etcetera. True to a certain extent. However, give him credit when he is due, because surprise, surprise he is more than just a moving advertisement board. He cannot head the ball, cannot tackle and is far from being pacy. Yet everytime he dons the England shirt he impresses me because of his great work ethic and his pinpoint crossing. I still remember the game he played against Greece in the WC 2002 qualifiers and that avenging penalty against Argentina in the Group stages four years ago.
And there I shall end my pro-Beckham rant. Men who work hard always win my respect.
But should he be England Captain? A resounding hell of a big damn no of course.
If England were to pass captaincy over to Steven Gerrard, and he could replicate the talismanic trophy-winning inspiration of pure genius for the Three Lions, Brazil can 'balek kampong'. Technically, he surpasses David Beckham in almost all respect though the latter is the better man to play wide. If Gerrard is given the liberty to roam at will, I am confident of England's place in the semi-finals at the very least. Putting aside his ball skills, his is the most natural leader in the England camp, though John Terry will give him a decent run for the money. This is the Englishman who kicked off the Miracle of Istanbul and subsequently, that amazing one-man show at Cardiff.
However, we all know that our speculation will come to nothing. Beckham will still be leading England for the World Cup, and I have a nagging feeling that he will retain the armband under McClaren should he not retire from international football. I just hope that the leadership qualites of Gerrard and Terry will still shine. You do not need the armband to be a leader in your own right. God save England. -
I would say Terry. I think Terry is more vocal and he looks more like a leader.
