Manchester United star Wayne Rooney is in line to return to England training on Friday.
The England striker is due to undergo a crucial scan less than a month after breaking his foot.
Boss Sven Goran Eriksson insisted: "He will not be fit to play football on Friday. But, hopefully, he will be OK to train. I have always been very positive that Wayne Rooney would be involved.
"Maybe that was more to do with my heart than my head.
"But now I am quite sure that at some stage of the World Cup he'll be ready to play. I strongly believe that."
Rooney suffered the injury against Chelsea on April 29.
But he was in plaster for less than a week and has been cycling at United's training ground under the supervision of boss Alex Ferguson.
Eriksson added: "We are in regular contact with Wayne and the doctors at United.
"I know how hard he works and I'm sure he is doing everything possible to be fit again.
"I know he is desperate to play in the World Cup and he thinks he'll be OK.
"So I don't think it should be a problem." -

Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has been declared fit for England's opening World Cup match.
The Sun says scan results indicate Rooney will be ready for the World Cup kickoff and England legend Jimmy Greaves said: "Everyone may be surprised but I'm not. I always thought Wayne would be fit and ready to lead us in Germany.
"People were getting really worried, writing off our World Cup chances before a ball had even been kicked. But I just knew in my heart of hearts he'd be okay.
"Everything is coming right for England just at the right time.
"We have three weeks to go and if there are any lingering doubts, they will be blown out of the water when we take on Paraguay on June 10."

hope they dun rush rooney to play englands 1st match, things many back fire. It may not only ruin england chance but also ruin rooney's career. i feel the best time 4 him to come back is during the third match of the group stage, if england cun get result during the 1st 2 match without rooney dun think they worth winning the cup...

Most people here wont agree with you, because they felt a team with Gerard, Lampard, Rooney, Owen, Terry, they are the best. England definitely stands a chance to win the WC, but not like some section of the fans here who thinks they will SURELY win it. Nothing is for sure, not even the Brazilians.

I think ivory coast has the best strikers, even better thank brazil's, when salomon kalou joins ivory coast after this world cup, they are quite formidable in the striking department
