Arsenal v Everton
Barclays Premier League, Emirates Stadium
Saturday, October 18, 2008, 15:00
Mikael Silvestre reported no ill-effects after making his first appearance in an Arsenal shirt on Monday night.
The French international was hampered by a muscular strain after arriving from Manchester United in August and, since recovering, has been an unused substitute in three successive first-team games.
In an effort to regain his match sharpness and push for a first-team place, Silvestre completed a full 90 minutes against Stoke City at Underhill. The 31-year-old looked calm and composed as Neil Banfield's side earned a 3-2 victory.
"I feel good," declared Silvestre afterwards. "I got through the 90 minutes without any discomfort or pain and physically I felt at the same level as my team-mates so it felt good.
"The boss [Arsène Wenger] asked me if I wanted to play because it
was a long time since I last played competitively, back in August or
July with United. Before I get back with the first team it was good for
me to play and get something other than training.
"It was a
perfect run-out before playing with the first team. It is a good level
in the Reserve League and getting to know my young team-mates was a
good experience.
"It is not a surprise [to see how good the young players are] because most of the first team are 20, 21-year-olds so the quality is always there. I expected the same quality in the Reserves and most of them train with the first team so I knew them already.
"It is the way the Club is set up," added Silvestre. "Everything is done to play good attacking football so the players enjoy it and you just have to make sure you give 100 per cent in the challenge because if you don’t get the ball you can't play the nice football."
2 less in the treatment room - Silvestre and Bischoff
good time to play everton. they are out of form.
maybe draw.... but hope for a win...
I a Arsenal Fan so Arsenal Will win 2-1 my other guess is 2-0 3-2
Arsenal and Everton will both be looking to return to form when they lock horns at Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal started the season in fine style before suffering a shock defeat at home to Hull at the end of last month.
They came within moments of losing to Sunderland a week later, only rescuing a point when Cesc Fabregas headed home an injury-time equaliser.
The result left the Gunners in fourth place and four points adrift of leaders Chelsea, so Arsene Wenger will be desperate for his team to return to winning ways following the international break.
Everton go into the game buoyed by the news that manager David Moyes has signed a new five-year contract.
The Toffess have enjoyed six good years under Moyes already but there were suggestions that the uncertainty over his future had affected performances on the pitch.
With the deal now signed, Everton can focus on climbing up the table from their current position of 15th.
Everton have failed to win in six matches in all competitions but remain unbeaten on their travels in the league and will be confident of taking something from their trip to London.
Tim Cahill must sit out the match as he continues to serve a three-match suspension following his red card in the derby defeat to Liverpool.
Phil Neville is likely to come back into the side after missing the 2-2 draw with Newcastle while Moyes must also assess the fitness of his international players before deciding on his starting XI.
Arsenal: Almunia, Eboue, Toure, Silvestre, Clichy, Walcott, Fabregas, Denilson, Nasri, Van Persie, Adebayor.
Everton: Howard, Hibbert, Jagielka, Lescott, Baines, Neville, Osman, Arteta, Fellaini, Saha, Yakubu.
