Former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira believes it is vital the Gunners add to their squad before the transfer deadline.
Vieira, now at Inter Milan, spent nine seasons in North London before moving to Italy in 2005.
Arsenal boss Wenger is under pressure to bolster his young side before the close of the transfer window, with an experienced midfielder believed to be high on his list of priorities.
France international Vieira feels his former club lack an enforcer and admits the team's limited experience could impede their search for silverware.
Speaking to Ford's FeelFootball.com debate programme, Vieira said: "Arsenal, on paper, in one game, are capable of beating any team.
"This season they need to sign a midfield player, a big leader in the middle. Arsene has made good signings over the years and I hope he will find somebody right for the club.
"They may struggle at the crucial moment in the season when they need to win the big games. They have the quality and potential but lack the experience to be competitive in all of the big games."
Wenger recently secured the surprise signing of Mikael Silvestre from Manchester United, and Vieira is backing his compatriot to shine at Emirates Stadium.
He added: "Mikael Silvestre can be a success at Arsenal. He has the mental strength and talent to cope with pressure."
