According to News of the World,
the Republic of Ireland international has intimated his desire to win
trophies – an aim he believes the Gunners are better equipped to help
him achieve.
The 32-year-old has been consistently linked with
the North London side since Jens Lehmann returned to his native Germany
earlier in the summer, although speculation initially died down after
Arsene Wenger handed Manuel Almunia the No. 1 jersey.
However,
it is believed Wenger’s interest has piqued once more after Given
hinted at his dissatisfaction with the Magpies’ efforts in the transfer
market so far.
Toon boss Kevin Keegan recently dismissed claims
that his chief custodian could leave, insisting he has no intention of
dispensing with one of the club’s very best players.
But the
Tyneside outfit’s current financial situation could force them to sell
if Arsenal’s offer is good enough, as the ex-Blackburn shot-stopper’s
departure would take a hefty ₤55,000-per-week off the wage bill at St
James’ Park.
