The 20-year-old joined Arsenal on loan at the age of 17 from Bastia in 2005, making the move permanent a year later.
He was loaned to Charlton for the 2006/07 season but was kept at the Emirates last season, making 15 appearances.
He
impressed at this year's African Cup of Nations for his country, a key
component in their midfield as they made it all the way to the final
before falling to winners Egypt.
However, he has been less impressive at club level, as Arsene Wenger
often persists with him at centre-back, which is not his natural
position.
He has nevertheless done enough to secure a new deal,
with Arsene Wenger denying claims that he was a bad buy, going as far
as to ensure he will become a great player, quite possibly at
centre-back.
"I believe he is a remarkable player and I was one of the very, very few who believed in Alexandre Song," Wenger said.
"I
can show you articles in newspapers which said that [he] was the worst
buy I have made but you will see in one or two years that he will be a
great player for Arsenal."
His extension has been described as
'long-term', with none of the details having yet been revealed. He
joins Bacary Sagna, who also signed an extension last week, with Cesc
Fabregas reported to be next in line.
