Academy striker Gilles Sunu has revealed he rebuffed offers from two of ArsenalÂ’s biggest rivals to join the Gunners.
Chelsea and Manchester United expressed an interest in the 16-year-old before he signed from French Second Division side Chateauroux in the summer.
The youngster also said he first knew about the possibility of a move to Arsenal, the club he supported as a child, two years ago.
“When I played for Chateauroux there was interest from Chelsea, Manchester United, Barcelona, AC Milan,” Sunu told Arsenal.com. “I chose Arsenal because Arsenal make careers for a lot of young players. It’s a great, great, great club — my favourite in the world, the team I support.
“But it was a very, very hard decision. I waited two years to take this decision but now I’m very happy I have because it is a great club.”
Sunu, who made his first Arsenal appearance in the reserve team’s 2-0 win over Portsmouth on Monday, said compatriot Arsène Wenger was a big factor in his decision to leave his family and move to London. The youngster is confident the Arsenal manager’s commitment to developing young talent will one day see him achieve his lifelong goal of appearing for his childhood heroes.
“Arsène Wenger played a big part in me coming here,” said Sunu. “He is French of course and it is easier for me to take his advice.
“I would like to play for his first team if it’s possible. It’s my dream, so that has to be my target.”
