Sometimes, we have to look at the circumstancs of the whole event. But most importantly, keep an open mind. The interpretation will be different if:
The teenage boy is suffering a terminally ill disease and he still looks normal. His dying wish is a Tag Hueuer sports watch but he settled for a $200 to $300 watch which is within his parents affordability.
Unless we know the background of the situation, if not, making judgment call may not a good idea. -

wow, too many pages to go through, so here are my thoughts.
Perhaps, the parents wanted to buy the boy a good watch so that it'll last him. So IMO, a $200-300 watch is not extremely expensive.. provided the boy don't have a watch now. Its different if he already has a few branded/expensive watches already. I also had an expensive watch given to me when I was about 18.. and it lasted me until now.. and I only have 1 watch... -

Well..the watch is nothing compared to the $2million plus condo in Sentosa that a rich tai-tai bought for her son on his 21st birthday...it was featured on TV a couple of years ago.

This reminded me of an incident that happened in my camp. My ops spec brought 3k cash to camp and booked out during lunch to buy a watch and i was wow... then he came back to camp disappointed to say that the watch costs 1.5k more and he was disappointed because he have to booked in again, get his atm card and booked out to buy again...
But anyways, what's wrong with a 15 year old owning a 150 - 200 buck watch? isn't it normal?

$200 for a watch may be peanuts to the father. Maybe the father is wearing a $40000 watch and mother is wearing another ex watch? They are thinking: fine i will buy him this $200 watch but he has to buy a $1000over with his own moneys. I will tell my son that.

I cannot imagine her marriage life.
U may as well be living like a poor man with millions in your account under her watchful eye. N it gets worse , u die right after ur retirement and never got to spend a single cent of your hard earned money.
My daddy always tell me to open different accounts and personal lawyer to sort ur extra financial stuffs. And dont let ur wife bog all ur money down. he he he -

as for the "what is expensive for u may be cheap for another" point, i believe this is quite out of the point. i was merely stating my opinion that (cheap or expensive for the parents not withstanding), a $200 watch is too extravagant for a 14 yr old child.
it's a question of "does the child REALLY need a $200 watch?". that's all i am asking.
i don't believe in spending unnecessarily. but i dun believe in depriving myself of anything in life, if i can afford it. -

ok, i have a feeling people are not getting the crux of my concerns here...
i can't care less if people wanna splurge themselves blind. what i am concerned is, what are the parents (and i refer to those who consistently shower their kids with gifts that are more expensive than necessary) teaching their children about the value of money.
