18-year-old Uber passenger dies after accident on Seletar Expressway

SINGAPORE - A teenage girl has died after the private-hire car she was riding in ran into a lorry on the Seletar Expressway (SLE).
Police said that the accident happened along the SLE towards the Bukit Timah Expressway, and involved a car, a lorry and a van.
They collided near the Woodlands Avenue 2 exit at about 3.40am on Sunday (Sept 25). None were trapped in the vehicles, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force.
The van driver and two car passengers were conveyed to Khoo Teck Puat hospital, police said.
The Straits Times understands that the van's driver, a 22-year-old man, was conveyed unconscious.
One of the car passengers, Ms Goh Pei Ling, 18, has died of her injuries.
The other passenger was her sister-in-law, who just held her wedding with Ms Goh's brother last Friday, Lianhe Wanbao reported.
They were returning to Chua Chu Kang from Pasir Ris in a Uber vehicle, the Chinese evening daily said.
Her sister-in-law, 20, has taken to social media to express her grief and guilt at not being able to help save Ms Goh.
Police investigation are ongoing.

Expected... I already expect this type of thing will happen. Unlike taxi, PH has to rush for jobs within for example 3 hours for incentives. I see more PH on bus lane during peak hours, making illegal u turn, some even park on road shoulder on expressway. They need to hide from pings after fulfilling incentives best place to hide is high way. Furthermore, they need to press more buttons on their screen mounted mobile phone. Some even have their eyes glued on GPS. All these adds up to more accidents. These apps are a big nuisance to social well being

These type of apps should be for retirees and car owners. I applaud uber for their launch of modified app to cater for the hearing impaired people who wants to earn more as PH drivers. Car owners can be part time PH to offset the high cost of car ownership. Retirees can drives to earn some side income and also help to keep their mind alert. It shouldn't to cater for young punks whom should develop themselves by going for further studies and not drive for income. PH cars now more than taxis....a responsible government should study all the pros and cons for allowing such apps to operate in Singapore.

First, PH apps are here to kill others, bearing in mind that billions are lost in their investment and they still got investors pouring money into them to lower fare and give out incentives so as to in a way capture the market and at the same time, as someone here mentioned, collect a large pool of the world personal data base. Govt are also major shareholders in PH apps, with a collection of Data base, they can trace and track anyone as long as your phone is on, even in toilet, they also know, and that help them to study people behavior, identify criminals and security issue like terrorism/terrorist movement. Therefore, the purpose of PH and taxi is different, altho on the driver level, it is on same plane, but the objectives and purpose are not in the same tune. Taxi companies/taxi drivers are competing with PH apps that have a different agenda beside making a profit, and when you are competing with any organization that take profit as only part or it secondary objectives, you are competing on the losing side.

Capturing data yes but not for surveillance. If I have 1 billion riders and if I sell them some products and make just $1. Knn 1 billion inside my pocket. These apps are not transportation apps in the first place. The govt should see through them and identify their agenda. Instead of doing that the government is joining them with stakes in these companies??? There will be suckers willing to drive for low fares. It will disrupt the taxi system and in the long term will not be good. Riders will opt for lower fares which is human behavior. Some forward looking countries are banning the likes of uber.

I do not think Uber and grab drivers are sucker, they got their own math to calculate the benefit, the pros and cons before joining apps ride as a driver. The problem is these apps companies are now running without the care for profit, the aim is to capture the market, at the same time, earning their share thru investing in rental car companies. And also at the same time, able to lead the pathway to driverless that shall ultimately kill all drivers. Low fares promotion is by company, it will still compensate the drivers + other incentives if one reach certain target and so forth with a 20% fare deduction. Today after 2 to 3 years in the market, apps drivers already surpass cdg taxi drivers

precisely ... rental income like LCR. so govt wants car light society ... if economy worsens then more people will drive PH and car population will grow. Is that what the government wants. With the increase of COE price, I see more bicycles and PMD electric scooters on the road nowadays. This is another big social problem on the road nowadays which LTA does not see. I cannot blame those people as even motorcycle COE is already so expensive. They need cheaper alternative transportation which is understandable. They can say that they will regulate. What is the manpower required for regulation. Electric scooters are already rampant on the road. Graveyard shift taxi drivers will know. So in conclusion LTA should think long term on these rider apps and PMD on the roads. To ban them now or to embrace them. I think we should embrace if our road infrastructure can accommodate. Just think about Vivocity Giant pick up point...knn a chaotic mess with PH/taxis...CBD traffic jam with PH cars and taxis jostling for space. Do we have big open space for PH cars to wait for pings in CBD?

Airport just closed some areas recently when they realized more and more PH cars are parking there to wait for pings. knn what a joke. By embracing these apps the govt should build some waiting areas for the PH cars correct?

From the way Govt is pouring money into apps rides and making them a sense of having a new car to ride and yet able to reduce the expenses thru some partime driving, I think many fell for it, especially so the younger generation who wanted a car and not a taxi. And just like grabtaxis, when driverless is on board, apps ride will hv an added advantage to offer paxs the ride because they already got the paxs datas, from address to their credit cards and their movement. There will be the case of like grab offering you grabcar instead of taxi, in near future, pax will be offered driverless car instead of apps drivers at certain designated locations ans these designation will continue tol expansion. And that is why I said, in the end, all die

driverless will not work in my opinion. 20 years later you will still see driven taxis around. If you study human behavior, who will risk their life taking a driverless car? If all vehicles on the road is driverless then perhaps maybe yes. All it takes is a mistake from one errant driver. If the vehicle employs sensors, then there will be maintenance issue. Accuracy of sensors, calibration etc. GPS accuracy and updating ? knn now a pokestop is just right in front of me and my GPS is indicating otherwise. My take is driven car and driverless car cannot co-exist. In a restricted area only for driverless cars then maybe yes. Taxis cover the whole singapore so driverless taxi will not happen
