The dishes you order do not come with rice. You have to order the rice separately at a bloody rip-off price of AUD3.00 for one portion!!!

*()@#($&(*!!! I'd rather just takeaway the dishes and cook my own rice, or not eat there at all! Daylight robbery!!
err, just came across this Night Owl chat. I am in Melbourne and dun sleep early. Hope it's ok to join in. Prices has gone up fast these few months. Think some Chinese restaurants are charging AUD3.00 a portion of rice...It used to be like AUD1.50

Izzit? The same few restaurants I frequent haven't really adjusted the prices drastically yet. Hope they won't.
You're welcome to join us, Tammiemeow!
I remember when I went into one of the Asian grocery shops along Victoria St about a month and a half ago, they had run out of their big sacks of rice. I think that was during the time when Singapore and its neighbours had a bit of panic re. a possible rice shortage.
Now, the large sacks are back in stock, but my favourite Golden Phoenix brand from Thailand is missing! Sigh...

Hi Rhonda, Pacific House along Victoria street also increase their price for steamed rice. I used to go there often. Now, I tabao dishes home and boil my own rice. Was at KFL supermarket in Flemington. Those big sacks of rice you mentioned went from AUD25 to AUD 38.
Luckily I am not a rice person...

I approached the Filipinos in my old ward without prejudice, and I did try to befriend a few of them even, but I left the place not wanting to keep in touch with any of them. Sadly, despite not wanting to be judgemental towards any race, sometimes, it's just not possible to because you keep encountering the same issues with them, and then you realise, you just can't afford to continue being naive in the hopes that somehow, things will be different this time round.
their case is bo pian... too many ppl to feed and if rice is too ex, ppl will try to revolt against e govt... thinking it's e govt tat caused e inflation
filipina nurses .....

I used to frequent Pacific House when I first arrived in Melbourne, not anymore, cause their Victoria St branch is too crammed, and even if you're waiting for takeaways, it's plain uncomfortable. It's not too bad during winter when it actually feels good to be squashed in a tight squeeze because you feel nice and warm and cozy.
I'm more of a noodles person too.
I tend to shop for Asian groceries in Victoria St and Boxhill. I head out to Chinatown as well, or to a few of the Korean grocery shops in the city.
Flemington is too far for me.

Hi, had same experience with some Filipinos during my studies here and used to have a colleague that I tried to tolerate...Think I know what issues you are referring to... Could be due to the environment that they live in... Sometimes, Singaporeans are more naive because of our environment.
i have to admit not eating chinese food unless forced by others when i was in melbourne..
staples were souvlakis and pizzas

A few of the Filipinos in my old ward were extremely... what's the word for it... egocentric. I think they became very defensive because in all the countries they have worked in (UK, Middle East, USA, and Singapore), they weren't highly regarded. So a few of them ended up being argumentative and quick to defend their pride in their country.
I overheard a very aggressive gay Filipino male nurse boasting to an Aussie staff that Australia has only produced one Miss World whereas The Philippines has produced four in the past, blah blah.
This same nurse will criticise everything about Melbourne but the thing is, he's applying for PR.
If this country is worse than his home country, the Philippines, WHY would he want to be a PR here?
Totally not gracious! He's the type who gives his country a bad name...
i am getting old...ding dock..times up...and i am going to zzz liao.
nitez everybody..
i try to work on some sichuan pics this sunday.
goodnight..
time to sleep..

I meant naive as in giving them chances, not being racist and prejudiced, only to face the same issues over and over again. Not naive as in being totally ignorant.
I think they are very united amongst themselves, and even though you try to befriend them, you'll still always be an outsider. They can be quite rude, talking animatedly in their own language, not caring if you or anyone else is being excluded.
They tend to be ... like pack animals... all herd around. If one likes something, everyone in the group will feel the same.

My ex colleague who was fired by my boss claims she was born and bred in Melbourne, and I was wondering why her accent is so Filipino... she was very angry and defensive when I asked her if she from there...

My diet here is mostly Asian stuff followed by Western stuff. Some weeks, it's pretty much 50-50.
I have a weakness for pizzas... but the last time I ate one was about two months ago. Pizza is fattening.

Yeah, some of them don't like to be associated with the Philippines and they think it's 'posher' to be born in some ang moh country.
That's because there's a negative connotation tagged to their country and they are trying to shake it off.
