true in a sense but i already have a cd writer albeit SLOW ( at 8x plus cranky performance) and it's hard to justify another burner, plus it's gonna be a nightmare just by dividing my 16Gb files into 12cd-rs...i did my calculations, it seems dvd burner faster assuming burn speed 16x and a dvd-r of 16x too...
A CDR doesn't burn at the same speed as a DVDr. Numbers are the same as in 16X, but the data that passes through are very different. -
Ok, paiseh, my bad about the maths just now, was calculating from a 1.4GB base. Get an external 52X cdrw drive. Full burn at full speed within 4 min per disc. So a 25 pack of cdrs wouldn't set you back alot either. Just look at the prices of external cdrw drives these days. If you still find that dvd rw is still better, by all means. To me, 16GB of data isn't alot, and I'll start putting common files together and delete off those I really think I never ever need, at least do abit of tidy up work before archiving them, so you won't waste time searching here and there.

so for a 16x speed, it would be like 21~22MB/s
anyway these are my calculations
constants: file size 16GB
parameters to consider: time, cost
cd-r (700mb)
creative cd-rw drive at 52x $ 63 int.
at 52x, burn speed is 7800kb/s assuming 1x is 150kb/s
therefore, assuming each disc is written to the max at 700MB for easy calculations,
time to burn per disc is 89.7s and that's only burn speed, not including time taken to cache files etc and the opening and closing of disc.
at 16GB, number of discs needed would be 22.8 but taken as 25 because there maybe some tiny leftover space that i cant fit anything to it.
time taken to burn(only) 25 x 89.7 s = just under 38mins
costs: $63
dvd-r (4.7GB) a little confused here
tdk burner at 16x $??? (cant remember last price)
iomega int 8x burner at $140
at 16x write speed is 21~22MB/s
time taken would be 6mins (claimed by manufacturer) but i can only count
47000MB/ 22 = 2136s = 35.6 mins ???
number of discs used= 16/4.7 = 4 discs
anyway i assume if i am using 8x, time taken would be 12mins/disc
costs: 16x burner $199 ? 8x burner $139
10 dvd-r 8x speed at $17 (offer not sure still valid or not)
time: 48mins
hmmm....dvd maybe slower -
well yes at the same time i am trying to spare myself of the agony of burning so many file by deleting useless ones or files i can back up somewhere...

bismarck... go to SITEX... get the TDK1616N its smthing liddat... cant rem the exact model no off my head. its at an attractive price point of $150 or so... and is likely to go even lower at SITEX i believe.
but imho as one of the forumnites, believe its ditzy, he/she/it claimed that u might be better off buying a second hand 52x burner. i sumhow think he got a valid point... 16 gigabytes isnt much...
i planning to buy a dvd burner... and i think i would need to backup at least 45 gigabytes from my system as well as periodic backups of perhaps a couple of gigs a month or so.
and furthermore as u said yourself,... its a one-off thingy... advisable to get a good cd burner like TDK... or even the premium brands like Plextor (since cd burners are awfully low in prices now) but ask yourself do u forsee doing extremely large backups like ghosting an entire hard-drive partition? or archiving a mission critical database of a few gigs? dvd imho is good for burning files of a large size that cant fit on a cd... like a single file being at a gig or so.
and those files u are backing up like multimedia and etc... unless they are ripped DVDs or oversized ISOs, think a cd burner would be your best bet... cheaper... and cheaper and more importantly, easily available and more reliable media as well. DVD-R media isnt THAT common yet... and paying $3-4 per DVD-R is kinda expensive. -

... still don't bother... get SCSI RAID
dual 15,000 rpm drives on a bus of 320 MB/s... defeats a 133 MB/s IDE (the stuff poor students' harddrives are made of) bus anyday
