dvd burner or cd burner?

i have tens of GB to backup before i reformat
was thinking which method would be better(cost effective and time)..
havent did my calculations yet. but impression is that dvd maybe cost effective because a 4.7Gb disc is only a few bucks and even if i use cd-r at 700MB it may not be viable.
however dvds only burn at a max 16X and at 4.7GB it's gonna be a long wait..yet cd-r, 700MB using a new cd burner would be like 52x at 700MB ? of course there's a lag time between each disc is burnt and i would have to break up my folders like mad and when i copy files back...it's gonna take me days....
advise ? on the other hand, maybe considering a portable HDD -
HDD is more cost effective. But get internal ones.

If your motherboard can support, I say take another internal HDD, its a much better investment and data transfer would be alot faster.

I don't know about DVD speed
but 16X can get 4.5GB burnt in 5mins.
That's a lot faster than CDR.

Simply because I don't really need to burn those disc THAT FAST.
Since it's 4.5GB per DVD, you will find that you usually wouldn't be using your DVDwriter that often. -

As I've said, you'll not be using the DVDwriter that frequently so waiting for a longer time isn't really going to be that noticable.
I'm using Benq 1610.
Not bad.
Quality will depend also on the burning software you use. And the SonyBurn sucks. -
Since u intend to buy burn then sell... any would do? I would get a TDK for keeps tho..
and besides.. surely u can do other stuff while waiting for it to burn.. thereby not wasting time? -

Might as well just get an external cdrw drive. 1cdr can hold 713MB with overburn finalisation, 2cdr can hold a little bit over 1.4GB, so you can roughly guess how many cdrs you're going to need to fit that 16GB. 16000MB divided by 700MB = 22.8 discs ?
true in a sense but i already have a cd writer albeit SLOW ( at 8x plus cranky performance) and it's hard to justify another burner, plus it's gonna be a nightmare just by dividing my 16Gb files into 12cd-rs...i did my calculations, it seems dvd burner faster assuming burn speed 16x and a dvd-r of 16x too...
