need some hardware recommendations

i guess i need a new graphics card..must be equal or better than nvidia geforce2,ati radeon7500.
plus i am asking on behalf of my lecturer who wants to buy a ext HDD. ard 40GB. wants price,brand, and where to buy in SLS....
finally he wants a brand new com too...not high-end...
generally a home based com...
i reckon a simple 1. under 1 k w/o monitor and HDD( he got 2 HDD liao)

ok.. mine is MSI MS-Starforce Geforce4 Ti 4200.. cost me abt $380 when i bought it abt last yr.. serve me quite well.. but i think it is too ex for u.. and i'm not sure if can play NFSU or not..
ur idea of ext HDD is those 2.5" laptop HDD encapsulated in a casing?
might be cheaper to buy a cheap external casing and the laptop HDD separately.. any requirement like sizes, colors etc?

if ur lecturer is not so IT suavy, then shld get from
1) those well known dealers like Dell etc..
2) shops that sell the whole PC..
pro of pre-assembled -> no compatibility issue. better warrenty n support.
con of pre-assembled -> more ex. cannot without HDD and/or monitor.
if ur lecturer is more IT suavy, then can consider assembling urself...
pro of self assembly -> can have ur own desired brand/model or all parts.
con of self assembly -> have to test on compatibility and warrenty may have to go back to supplier

Just go to the shops at Sim lim and buy a pre-assembled set from them.
Some shops also offer 3 years warranty on hardware.
With a budget of $1000......I think can get a rather good system. -

i was thinking of getting the guy who fixed my com to do it for him but...i got a feeling he fleeced me and will also fleece my lecturer.
so i was thinking, can someone come up a certain specs list, or i state the req for processor and ram etc, then u tell me the possible motherboard and other stuff to fill it in...
