well whats your monitor? the size is quite impt... because it will determine the resolution at which u intend to run the gfx card at...

9600XT good mid-price card with FREE HL2, top it off with USD$10 and u can have the back-catalog of Valve [half-life 1 , CS:CZ]

I thought it's the graphics card that determines the resolution? Mine is the geforce 2 MX400. Can only go up to 1152/864.
But I'm using a 15" LCD so the native resolution it can support is 1024/768.
Actually daydreamed about getting the 19" but realised that its native res is only 1280/1024, similar to a 17"
I think I'll just use until my current one blows then I get a new one.
Save money more important. hah -

tell you i always enjoy your comic strips in the chronicle... keep it up man. do consider it as a serious business sideline someday. u draw very well and able to convey facial expressions that are spot on. and i like the understated style... meaning not too much colors, as in not too distracting... well i dunno how to put it... brain is dead

monitor determines resolution in the sense if u get a LCD, you can NEVER go beyond the native resolution the monitor is rated at... and going below that results in ugly interpolation...
well what do u use ur gfx card for? if you using it for mainly graphics work and performance in games are of a lower priority, i would advise getting a Radeon 9500 or above card that has DVI capability... and of course its capable of reasonable perf in games... but dun expect 60 frames per second in Doom 3 with all the eye candy on... Radeons are reputable for their image quality than nvidia cards being capable of better color reproduction than nvidia
but if you are a serious gamer, i would recommend Nvidia cards instead. a geforce fx seems to be at a good price point now/
i assume u are on a budget as i believe we have something in common,,,, poor undergrad students.

talking abt LCDs, since u are a gfx designer... recommend u check out Eizo LCDs... using one now... and the color reproduction is BEAUTIFUL... compared to others. And anyway trust your eyes... go check out both 17" and 19" LCDs... if 17" u can read the text without straining your eyes, getting a 17" is a no brainer. 19" is kinda expensive when u are talking abt quality LCDs.
and try not to get a MX for your next purchase... the image quality isnt very good -

i believe most current radeons/geforces fx shd be able to run nfsu2... i mean it makes economic sense for the manufacturer to cater for a reasonably spec'd out machine... i highlight the word current... so any mid-range graphic card more than maybe 1.5 years old is likely to sputter when running the game...

like Bell or Cybermind on the fifth floor. Fuwell is a good bet as well. just dun take any attitude or bullcrap from these ppl. then u will be kind of safe -

the box of the graphics card has CZ on it.
seriously, i dunno which 1 to get because i am also buying a dvd writer soon and this graphics card thing..isnt cheap.
i just want a relatively simple 1. because i dont play much games on it.
just CZ and NFSU2 at the most. though i have yet to touch nfsu1 due to lousy graphics card. -

since ur motherboard comes with a agp slot, im sure u can buy any gfx card. i got a good friend of mine using an nforce motherboard with an ati radeon 9500. and she's very happy with it.
so i believe u shd be able to play ur games satisfactorily using radeon 9500 PRO or 9600... but i warn u beforehand hor... CZ eyecandy no problem, NFSU eyecandy... erm think get a radeon 9700 pro at least... but im sure both will work pretty fine...
those game companies need to make money and those people who keep buying the latest graphics card is mot likely a small segment of their targetted audience -

recommend original ati 9700 pro... should be able to be found rather cheaply
try to get original ati red boxes whenever possible... yes ati manufactured gfx cards ba.
err your motherboard should have a VGA connector near the ports where u plug in the keyboard, printer, etc etc... considering its a nForce enabled mobo. try using nForce graphics... its definitely not too shabby.
