The England international’s future has been in doubt after enduring a frustrating campaign with Liverpool last season.
Mega-rich clubs Real Madrid and Manchester City are said to be interested in the Reds midfield star and would jump at the chance to sign the Englishman should he want to leave the club.
However, Kuyt is adamant that Gerrard must stay with Liverpool because he is a critical player for the Reds.
"I wouldn't like to see Steven Gerrard go," Kuyt told Sky Sports.
"Everyone wants to keep Stevie at the club.
"He is the captain, he is very important and his heart is bleeding Liverpool.Â
"So it must be a very good offer or a very good club if he wants to leave.
"I don't know anything about this. It is just up to him, up to the club."
The Holland international was disappointed to see Rafael Benitez leave Liverpool for Inter Milan and credited the Spaniard with helping him develop into the player he is today.
"I was sad to see him go.
"Rafa was very important for Liverpool.
"He won the Champions League and he made me the player that I have become."
