Liverpool
have insisted that a meeting that took place on Thursday between boss Rafael
Benitez, chairman Martin Broughton and managing director Christian
Purslow proved "constructive."
The talks marked the first in a
series of intended meetings between the trio as the Reds attempt to look
forward following a dismal 2009-10 campaign which saw the club fail to
qualify for next season's Champions League.
It is believed that
Benitez was hoping to discover what sort of budget he would be able to
work with as he looks to bolster his squad in the summer, despite the
uncertainty surrounding owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks and their
ability to provide funds.
Numerous reports have linked the
Spaniard with a move to Juventus in recent months,
although Liverpool insist that the first scheduled meeting was
ultimately positive.
A statement from the club read: "We are
pleased that the first of what is intended to be a series of meetings
took place today between the chairman, managing director and the
manager. The meeting was constructive.
"The chairman shared his
views about plans for the future of the club. There was an exchange of
views on issues of concern to both the board and the manager which were
either addressed or to be picked up in forthcoming meetings."
